One of the most majestic kings, Raja Raja the Great, ruled Tamil Nadu from 947 to 1014 CE. In Mani Ratnam's masterpiece "Ponniyin Selvan," Jayam Ravi played the role of Raja Raja Chola as a sincere and upright leader. By twinning the historical figure on screen, Jayam Ravi showed his appreciation for being given the role of the monarch.
While Jayam Ravi played Raja Raja Chola, Karthi played Vandhiyathevan, and Vikram played Adhitha Karigalan, the elder brother of Raja Raja Chola, who is also known as Arulmozhi Varman and Ponniyin Selvan. Raja Raja, was a Chola emperor and the most powerful Tamil king in South India.
Being a skilled administrator, Rajaraja I also constructed the magnificent Rajarajeshwaram Temple in Thanjavur, the Chola capital. Of all the temples built in the medieval south Indian architectural style, this one is regarded as the best. Tamil Nadu has recently celebrated Raja Raja Chola's 1037th birth anniversary as 'Sadhya Vizha'.
In a statement, the Tamil Nadu state government announced that the birth anniversary of Raja Raja Chola would be celebrated as a government event every year on November 3. Marking the 1037th birth anniversary of Emperor Raja Raja Chozha, Thanjavur city has hosted the grand and colorful Sadhaya ceremony during which the Rajarajeshwaram temple went resplendent.
Sharing the celebration, Jayam Ravi, who played Raja Raja Chola in the movie 'Ponniyin Selvan', cited that the pride of this great king must be shared with the posterity. The actor took to Twitter and Thursday and wrote, "Sadaya Ceremony for Raja Rajacholan. Let's honor his glory and pride and impart it to the following generation. What did I do to get this fortune to "reflect you on the screen" as Ponniyin Selvan."
The five-chapter novel "Ponniyin Selvan," written by Kalki Krishnamoorthy in 1955, serves as the basis for the plot of the movie. Ponniyin Selvan's two parts were written by Elango Kumaravel and B. Jeyamohan. This treasured venture was directed by Mani Ratnam, and takes place in 10th-century Thanjavur. The first part of the film, which was released in theatres on September 30, made a whopping box office collection and recently touched 500 crores worldwide.
