The war of words between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu over the Mekedatu project intensifies, which has implied that both governments are yet to find an amicable resolution in the midst of the decades-long dispute over the Cauvery river.
While Karnataka has decided to convene an all-party meeting to implement the project, the Tamil Nadu government has reiterated that it won't allow even a single brick to be laid for the project. As the uproar grows, the developments have shown the escalating drift between the neighbours. Karnataka stands firm in constructing the project across the Cauvery river and Tamil Nadu staunchly opposes it as the project goes against the interest of the farmers in the state.
On Tuesday - March 8, Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai has expressed his government's commitment to implement the Mekedatu project and he also ruled out the room for negotiations with Tamil Nadu. He said that he will be convening an all-party meeting soon to pursue the project.
Reacting to the announcement from Basavaraj Bommai, Tamil Nadu Water Resources Minister Duraimurugan has said that the state government would not allow the Karnataka government to lay a single brick for the project. According to reports, Duraimurugan said, "Not only Rs 1,000 crore, even if the Karnataka government allocates Rs 5,000 crore, the Tamil Nadu people also will not allow a brick to be laid for the Mekedatu project."
