The much-expected trailer of 'Thalaivi' was unveiled on Tuesday, exactly a month ahead of its release. Thalaivi is a multilingual biographical film about the life of J Jayalalithaa, who was the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and one of the iron ladies in independent India. Jayalalithaa had always been a political figure built with a fortress and undying determination and audacity and apart from being a product of the cinema industry, Jayalalithaa had emerged to be one of the powerful and successful Chief Ministers of Tamil Nadu.
Jayalalithaa had served as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for five times, the highest duration that any woman had held as Chief Minister in India. She had passed away on 5th December 2016 at the age of 68 and following her demise, there were births of talks that her life story would be made as a movie. While there were two to three directors on the cards, reputed Tamil director AL Vijay has confirmed that he will be directing a movie based on Jayalalithaa's life, which is a Himalayan task amid displaying an iconic reprise.
Titling the movie as 'Thalaivi', AL Vijay went to the floors of shooting on November 10, 2019, and the movie was simultaneously shot in Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi languages under the same title. According to reports, the film was officially announced on 24 February 2019, on the occasion of Jayalalithaa's birthday, with Bollywood star Kangana Ranaut playing the role of Jayalalithaa. The cast and crew of the movie had become significant as some of the notable stars were picked to act in the movie.
While Ranaut plays the role of Jayalalithaa, Arvind Swami plays the role of MG Ramachandran in the movie. The production was halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown and the team braced up a long delay to resume the shootings. The shootings were recently resumed and it was expected that the movie will hit the screens before the Tamil Nadu assembly polls. Amid large-scale expectations, the movie's trailer was released on Tuesday.
The trailer has promised the untold story of Jayalalithaa from how she celebrated as an actress and what she had faced when she emerged as a replacement of powerful icon MG Ramachandran, the legendary actor who was resplendent Chief Minister and the founder of AIADMK, the political party he founded after quitting from the DMK. The trailer runs for three minutes and it had touched upon how the movie would unfold what remains untold.
The trailer includes the scenes where MGR inviting Jayalalithaa to active politics, the rise of rivals, and ruckus in the assembly when she was the Chief Minister. The trailer claims to be unfolding the unbelievable journey and concludes with MGR's statement that, "If you love people, people will love you. That is politics". Thalaivi will be released on April 23, 2021, nearly two weeks after the Tamil Nadu assembly poll, the first legislative election since the demise of Karunanidhi and Jayalalithaa.
Produced by Vishnu Vardhan Induri and Shailesh Singh, Thalaivi is directed by AL Vijay and written by Baahubali fame KV Vijayendra Prasad. The music is composed by GV Prakash Kumar while Anthony and Ballu Saluja had taken the role of editing. Kangana Ranaut plays as Jayalalithaa and Aravind Swami plays as MGR. Poorna has been roped to act as VK Sasikala while Madhoo will be acting as MGR's wife Janaki Ramachandran. Prakash Raj will be playing as late DMK Patriarch Karunanidhi, Jisshu Sengupta will be playing as Sobhan Babu, while Samuthirakani will be playing as RM Veerappan. The movie has also inducted Nassar, Bhagyashree, Vidya Pradeep, and Raj Arjun into important roles.
