Prime Minister Narendra Modi has on Friday - January 19 arrived in Chennai with a key itinerary for three-day trip in Tamil Nadu. The Prime Minister was received by Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi, Chief Minister MK Stalin and senior dignitaries and amidst a rousing welcome, he drove to Nehru Stadium where he inaugurated the Khelo India games.
Accompaning the Prime Minister during the inauguration were RN Ravi, MK Stalin, Union Ministers of State Anurag Thakur, Nisith Pramanik, and L Murugan, and Tamil Nadu Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Development Udhayanidhi Stalin. Amid a galore of attention, the event was inaugurated by the Prime Minister and it is expected that being a host of Khelo India games would give a crucial push to Tamil Nadu's sports infrastructure.
Earlier this month, Udhayanidhi Stalin met Prime Minister Modi in Delhi and invited him to inaugurate the Khelo India games in Chennai. Tamil Nadu has successfully hosted 44th Chess Olympiad in Chennai in 2022 and has been taking leaps in enhancing the sporting facilities across the state. The Khelo India games will be held from January 19 to January 31 and over 5,500 athletes will be taking part in 26 competitive sports and by hosting this mega event, Tamil Nadu aims to reap a success as being a state that is excelling in sports.
The games will be held in various parts of the state including Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore, and Trichy. The competition will have a variety of sports like football, volleyball, kabaddi, squash, archery, boxing, weightlifting, badminton, table tennis, cycling, swimming, tennis, shooting, gymnastics, yoga, and wrestling. It must be noted that Tamil Nadu's traditional sport, Silambam is being introduced as a demo sport for the first time in the history of Khelo India games.
Khelo India is a sports programme launched by the Narendra Modi government in 2017 and it aims at improving India's sports culture at the grass-root level through organized talent identification, structured sporting competitions and infrastructure development. Besides inaugurating Khelo India games in Chennai, Prime Minister Modi has come with a plan to stay in Tamil Nadu for three days.
It is propably the first time Narendra Modi is staying in the state for three days in recent times. As per his itinerary, after inaugurating the Khelo India games, Modi will be staying in Chennai at Raj Bhavan, the Governor's residence. During his stay at Raj Bhavan, he will also be meeting senior leaders of BJP's Tamil Nadu unit. On Saturday - January 20, he will start from Raj Bhavan at 9.20 am and will arrive at Chennai Airport from where he will be travelling to Trichy.
He will reach Trichy at 10.55 am and he will then travel to the iconic Sri Rangam Temple and would offer prayers. After wrapping up from Trichy, he would travel to Rameswaram where he will be visiting Ramanatha Swamy Temple on the island. He will be spending his day in Rameswaram and will be staying at Vivekanandha Math.
On Sunday - January 21, he will again be visiting the Rameswaram Temple and will be taking a holy bath along the temple coast. He will take part in poojas and would read 'Ramayana' for two hours. After completing his tour in the temple, he will visit Kodhanda Ramar temple in Dhanushkodi. After wrapping up from these visits, he will leave Rameswaram to Madurai from where he would embark his flight to Delhi. It is pertinent to note that all these temple visits from Modi would come days ahead of the Ram Temple inauguration in Ayodhya, which will be held on January 22.
