At least ten people have died and dozens have injured after a three-storeyed building collapsed in Maharashtra's Bhiwandi on Monday and the rescue operations are underway to rescue 25 people, who are still feared to be trapped under the debris of the building that collapsed in the wee hours of Monday.
According to reports, the ten deceased include seven children and three others after the residential apartment in Bhiwandi, around 10 kilometers from Thane, had crumpled while the residents were sleeping. The mishap had happened at around 3.40 am on Monday and the visuals from the spot had shown that it has been large-scale destruction.
The residential apartment, Jhilani building is nearly 43-year-old infrastructure and it was said to be in a state of dilapidation. Following the incidents, rescue teams have been deployed.
The teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Thane Disaster Response Force (TDRF) are on the ground and they have been rescuing those who were trapped under the rubble. The reports say the building has 40 flats and it had sheltered around 150 people.

According to Reuters, Chief of NDRF Satya Pradhan said that 20 to 25 people were reportedly trapped and the teams were using a canine squad to search persons trapped in the debris. According to reports, the local residents living nearby had pulled out some of the persons from the rubble and dozens have been injured, who are currently getting treated at the local hospitals.

A two-year-old was one among the deceased and the official attached to the Thane Municipal Corporation said that the collapsed building was not in the list of dilapidated structures of the civic body. The collapse had become a second deadly mishap in Maharashtra in a month. Last month, scores have died and dozens were injured after the five-storeyed residential building had collapsed in Mahad, Raigad district of Maharashtra.
After the collapse in Bhiwandi, Thane made headlines, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had taken to Twitter and expressed his condolences. In his tweet, he said, "Saddened by the building collapse in Bhiwandi, Maharashtra. Condolences to the bereaved families. Praying for a quick recovery of those injured. Rescue operations are underway and all possible assistance is being provided to the affected."

President Ram Nath Kovind took to Twitter and said, "The loss of lives in the building collapse at Bhiwandi, Maharashtra is quite distressing. In this hour of grief, my thoughts and prayers are with the accident victims. I wish speedy recovery of the injured. Local authorities are coordinating rescue and relief efforts."
