In the midst of bagging several honours and accolades, Suriya's 'Jai Bhim' has still been caught up with the Vanniyar controversy as a court in Chennai has on Thursday - May 5 ordered the police to file an FIR against Suriya, Jyothika, and the movie's director TJ Gnanavel. The development has come as per the petition that was filed by Rudra Vanniyar Sena, a Vanniyar outfit in Tamil Nadu.
Jai Bhim was released on November 4, 2021, directly on Amazon Prime Video and in the same month, Rudra Vanniyar Sena had approached the Chennai Saidapet Court and sought a directive from the judicial body ordering the police to register a case against the movie makers. The petitioner has alleged that several scenes are against the community and that the Vanniyar community was shown in a bad light.
The outfit further alleged that the movie was made out of Vanniyar phobia and said that the movie has a motive of instigating communal violence between communities. When the petition came to the hearing on April 22, 2022, the petitioner has submitted to the court that several scenes in the movie have been shot only to show the community in a bad light.
According to reports, the court has accepted the petitioner's argument and on Thursday, it has given a direction to the Chennai police to file an FIR against all the three - Suriya, Jyothika, and Gnanavel. The court has said that some cognizable offence is disclosed in the complaint. It has been reported that the court has forwarded the complaint to the Inspector of Police in Velachery to register an FIR.
After pronouncing the order of filing an FIR against Suriya, Jyothika, and Gnanavel, the court has adjourned the hearing for May 20. The latest allegation was part of a slew of criticisms from the Vanniyar leaders against Jai Bhim. The Vanniyar backed PMK had played a vital role in keeping the issue brewing in the midst of several awards and recognitions for the movie.
The Vanniyar Sangam has alleged that in one of the scenes in the movie, the symbol of Vanniyar Sangam is shown in the calendar behind a police sub-inspector who would later be convicted of custodial torture and death of a man who belongs to the Irular caste. Jai Bhim was bankrolled by Suriya and Jyothika under their own 2D Entertainment and helmed by Gnanavel. While Suriya acted in the lead role as an advocate, Lijomol Jose, Manikandan, Rajisha Vijayan, Prakash Raj, Rao Ramesh, and Tamizh had played important roles.
