The 1991 classic gangster cult flick 'Thalapathy', directed by Mani Ratnam, needs no mention of its blockbuster victory. The film is still regarded as the best of all, having poetically and primarily explored the mother-son relationship. The brotherly rival between superstar Rajinikanth and Arvind Swamy is a key part of the movie. While Rajinikanth played Surya, Arvind Swamy played Arjun.
Arvind Swamy made his debut in acting through Thalapathy and in the movie, he played the role of District Collector and half-brother to Rajinikanth, who was a gangster. The massive success of Thalapathy opened a big market for Arvind Swamy and he went on to act in dozens of movies including Roja, Bombay, Indira, and Alaipayuthey.
After the 2000s, he took a long hiatus from acting in the movies and made his best and most successful comeback through the movie 'Thani Oruvan'. The movie was released in 2015 and starred Jayam Ravi and it turned heads for Arvind Swamy's modern villainous role. Now he has several projects in the pipeline including Saduranga Vettai 2, Naragasuran, and Vanangamudi.
Kollywood is filled with an interesting buzz that Arvind Swamy will reunite with Rajinikanth in the latter's next project after his current one Jailer. Tentatively titled 'Thalaivar 170', this new project will be helmed by 'Don' director Cibi Chakaravarthi. It has been reported that Arvind Swamy will act with Rajinikanth for the first time since Thalapathy, after 31 years.
It has also been speculated that Arvind Swamy will play the antagonist for Rajinikanth and it's certain that the fans would be awe-struck by seeing this combination on the big screens. Currently, Rajinikanth is busy with the shooting of Jailer, directed by Nelson Dilipkumar. Thalaivar 170 will be bankrolled by Lyca Productions and the reports say that Cibi Chakaravarthi is actively involved in the movie's final stage of script work and it is anticipated that a formal announcement will be made regarding this soon.
