Om Raut, the director of the recently released mythological epic Adipurush, has landed in trouble for an old tweet in which he allegedly insulted Lord Hanuman. The tweet, which was posted in 2015 and later deleted, asked if Hanuman was deaf and complained about loud music being played on Hanuman Jayanti.

The tweet resurfaced online after the release of Adipurush, which features Devdatta Nage as Hanuman, and sparked outrage among netizens who accused Raut of hypocrisy and disrespecting Hindu sentiments. Raut, who had earlier reserved a seat for Lord Hanuman in every theatre screening Adipurush, has not yet responded to the controversy.

This is not the first time that Adipurush has faced criticism and backlash from various quarters. The film, which is based on the Hindu epic Ramayana, has been accused of distorting facts, hurting religious sentiments, plagiarising artwork and using poor visual effects.

Earlier, the teaser of Adipurush was released and was slammed for its poor graphics and animation. The film was also trolled for comparing Saif Ali Khan’s character to Khilji from Padmaavat. A VFX company, VFXwala, issued a statement clarifying that they were not involved in the project.

Upon releasing, the film director Om Raut landed in trouble for kissing Kriti Sanon on her cheek at Lord Venkateswara temple in Tirupati. The video of the incident went viral and drew flak from netizens who called it disrespectful and inappropriate.

The film, which is based on the Hindu epic Ramayana, has grossed over Rs 140 crore worldwide on its first day, making it the sixth Indian film ever to cross Rs 100 crore mark on the opening day. The film has also recorded the highest day-one collection for any film made in Hindi on a pan-India level. The film has performed exceptionally well in the Telugu states, where it has collected over Rs 60 crore on its first day. The Hindi version of the film has also done well, earning over Rs 36 crore on its first day.
