Violation of lockdown: Chennai police books 8100 cases and seizes over 7000 vehicles!

The Greater Chennai police department has booked 8,105 cases against people who reportedly violated the lockdown and restrictions in the city and seized 7,413 vehicles from them in the span of 24 hours from 6 am of June 22 to 6 am of June 23, as the city's law enforcement agency has been strictly surveilling the movements of people amid the intense lockdown. 

According to the press release of the state government that was issued on Tuesday, the city's police department had booked these cases against people who traveled in the city without valid reasons and e-passes. Seized 7,413 vehicles include 6,926 two-wheelers, 215 auto-rickshaws, and 272 lightweight vehicles, and cases have been booked against the violators under the appropriate grounds.

The state government has imposed the enhanced lockdown in Chennai and the areas in Kancheepuram, Thiruvallur, and Chengalpattu that fall under the limits of the Greater Chennai police for 12 days from June 19 to June 30 to curb the movement of people to get the sign of flattening the COVID-19 curve as an outcome. The government has directed the concerned authorities to grip up the safety and security measures to make the enhanced lockdown pay-off in containing the spread of the pandemic.

The Chennai city police have installed over 230 check posts in its limits to monitor the movements of people and vehicles. The police personnel has been patrolling on the highways and streets across the city to ensure that people stick to the guidelines. The city's police commissioner has strictly warned that the violators will be booked legally.

Following that, the police department has stayed vigil and it has booked over 8000 cases in a day in the city. The police have installed barricades to check the vehicles and if people found violated the restrictions and curfew under section 144, they would be booked and their vehicles would be seized. 

The state government has strictly permitted the functioning of emergency services and people are only allowed to exit the residence for purchasing essential commodities. As of Tuesday evening, the state has reported 64,603 positive cases so far of which 28,428 are active - including isolation, 35,339 have been discharged, and 833 had succumbed to the virus.
