The Tamil film and television industry is in shock after the news of actor G Marimuthu’s death broke out on Friday morning. The actor, who was also a director and producer, suffered a cardiac arrest while dubbing for the popular serial Ethir Neechal. He was 56 years old.
Marimuthu was a familiar face to the audience, having acted in more than 50 films and several TV shows. He made his debut as a director with the critically acclaimed film Kannum Kannum in 2008. He also directed Pulivaal, starring Vemal and Prasanna.
He was last seen on the big screen in Jailer, which released in August this year. He was also part of the star-studded cast of Indian 2, the sequel to the 1996 blockbuster Indian, directed by Shankar. The film, which features Kamal Haasan, Kajal Aggarwal, Siddharth, Rakul Preet Singh and others, is expected to release next year.
Marimuthu was also a popular serial artist, who had acted in Ethir Neechal, known for his standout performance as a villainous character with versatile and natural acting skills, which earned him many fans and accolades. He was also a mentor to many aspiring actors and filmmakers.
Marimuthu’s sudden death has left his family, friends and colleagues in grief. Many celebrities from the Kollywood industry have expressed their condolences and paid tribute to him on social media.
Actor Prasanna, who had acted with Marimuthu in Kannum Kannum, tweeted: “Deeply shattered to know the passing away of director G Marimuthu. We did #KannumKannum and #Pulivaal together. We had a brothers like bond. We agreed to disagree on many. His life wasn't easy at all. As an actor finally he was doing very well. He shud've been there for a while longer. Sad. Rip. Poittuvaappu".
Actors like Vijay Sethupathi, Shanthanu Bhakyaraj, Sasikumar who had shared screen space sharing heartfelt condolences in social media. Marimuthu is survived by his wife and two children. He had recently celebrated his 27th wedding anniversary on September 2nd.
