It has previously been announced that Tamil actor Vijay's Varisu, directed by Tollywood filmmaker Vamshi Paidipally, is set for a Pongal release. Sri Venkateswara Creations is funding both the Tamil, Telugu version of the film, which will be titled Vaarasudu in Telugu. Udhaynidhi Stalin's Red Gaint Movies has bought the distribution rights to the film.
Along with H Vinoth's Varisu, Ajith Kumar's Thunivu will also debut at this time of year. Actor Shaam recently gave an interview to a major network, where he stated how Thalapathy Vijay reacted to the news that Ajith's massive film Thunivu will be competing with his own film, Varisu, during Pongal 2023.
The actor who will be seen in a supporting role in Varisu said "I spoke to Vijay anna on the phone and told him that Varisu will be releasing along with Thunivu. He said It’s good, no? He’s also a friend. Let his film also do well and ours too. It’d be such a celebration’." Co-starring Rashmika Mandanna, Varisu will mark Vijay’s debut in the Telugu industry.
It's worth remembering that these biggies locked horns in theatres in the past for the movies such as; Villain – Bhagavathy (2002), Thirumalai – Anjaneya (2003), Paramasivan – Aadhi (2006), Pokkiri – Alwar (2007), Veeram - Jilla (2014). And Thunivu director H. Vinoth recently opened up about the box office where he said "Actually, such clashes between films should be encouraged, because filmmakers will then try to deliver a good film as they are pitted against another film,"
Intriguingly, Shaam revealed that H.Vinoth had also wanted him to play the villain in Thunivu, but he had to decline because of his commitment to Varisu. Prabhu, Sarathkumar, Shaam, Srikanth, Yogi Babu, Jayasudha, Sangeetha, Samyukta, and S.J. Suryah, plays the supporting cast in the film. Dil Raju is funding the film with a massive budget and releasing it in Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi all at once. Cinematographer Karthik Palani and editor Praveen KL are completing the film crew.
