Veteran Tamil comedy actor Pandu has passed away in the wee hours of Thursday in Chennai at the age of 74 due to the COVID-19 complications. His untimely demise has become one of the everlasting agonies to the Indian cinema, which has been witnessing the back-to-back losses of icons in recent times.
Pandu rose to popularity through his comedic characters in hundreds of movies and he later retained to be one of the household names of the industry, celebrated by fans across all generations. He was popularly known for his cameo role in Ajith's 'Kadhal Kottai', who accompanies Ajith in Rajasthan and he also acted as a police officer in Vijay's 'Ghilli'. He also had appeared in several movies, sharing the screen with prominent stars and fellow comedians.
Pandu was long active since 1988 and he also had a brief time in acting from 1970 to 1981. He has left the world by reserving a name that has to be counted on in the history of Tamil and Indian cinema. According to reports, Pandu and his wife Kumudha had tested positive for the COVID-19 viral infection and the couple was getting treated at a private hospital in Chennai.
Despite the efforts to save him, Pandu had breathed his last in the wee hours on Thursday without responding to treatment while his wife Amudha continues to be in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Pandu was last seen in 'Indha Nilai Maarum', which had Ashwin Kumar, Ramkumar, and Nivedhithaa Sathish in the lead roles. Pandu had acted in over 175 movies in Tamil, which is a remarkable feat as a comedian.
Apart from playing comedy roles, Pandu was successfully running a company called 'Capital Letters' and beautifully designed name boards for the residences of the many leading film personalities and their offices. He excelled in his business and in what has become a significant feat in his life is that Pandu had designed the 'Two leaves' logo and the party flag for the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK).
The reports say that Pandu had also designed the Tamil Nadu Tourism Logo. He made his debut as a comedian in 1981 released 'Karaiyellam Shenbagapoo' in which he joined his brother Idichapuli Selvaraj, who had appeared in several films as a comedian. Born on 19th February 1947 in Komarapalayam, Namakkal district, Pandu entered the College of Arts and Crafts in Chennai after finishing his schooling and nurtured his interest in creative art.
Pandu and Kumudha are parents to three sons- Prabhu, Panchu, and Pintu. Veteran actor Manobala shared the news of Pandu's passing away. Taking to Twitter, Manobala wrote, "Rip Pandu...He passed away early morning today due to Covid" and he also had shared the picture of the deceased actor. Ever since the news of Pandu's demise broke out, several fans and fraternities have been paying their tribute to the deceased actor and expressing their condolences to his family.
