Muniyamma, who was fondly known and called as Paravai Muniyamma in the Tamil Cinema Industry, has passed away at her residence in Madurai in the wee hours of Sunday. She was aged 83 and died due to the age-related illness.
Apart from her cinematic appearances, she was also a notable fork singer. She was born in Paravai village in Madurai and the name of her hometown prefixed her birth name and she began her singing career by performing in temples and she went on to get inducted by Lakshman Shruthi, the popular musical troupe through which she gained a spotlight.
Well-renowned music director Vidyasagar introduced the deceased artist in his movie. In 2003, she made her debut in Vikram starred 'Dhool' and she played as Vikram's grandmother and the debut appearance had elevated her and bestowed with huge appreciation. The fierce singing 'Madurai Veeran Thaane' was one of her ever-lasting songs that added more power to the movie and brought the folk artist to the big screens.
Following the success, she acted in multiple movies like Thoranai, Maan Karate, Venghai, Kovil, Thamizh Padam, Sandai, Devathayai Kanden, and Veeram and she has kept her presence on television by hosting the cooking show in which she presented the recipes of the traditional Tamil food. 2017 released Sathura Adi 3500 starring Nikhil Mohan and Iniya was her last movie and she fell ill during that year.
When she was battling illness, she also ought to battle the rumors which aired that she has died and one such rumor hopped out recently and she reached out to the people through her video and said that she was alive and doing well. In 2017, then Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has announced a relief of 6 lakh to Muniyamma in the form of fixed deposit and she awarded Rs 6000 as monthly pension from former Chief Minister MG Ramachandran's trust.
Muniyamma appealed to the government to aid her son if she has passed away. The reputed folk singer and veteran actor was surviving with her son and grandchildren. She lost her daughter-in-law in 2015. According to the reports, the last rituals will be taking place in Madurai on Sunday. In 2019, she was conferred with Kalaimamani Award by the government of Tamil Nadu.
