Veteran Congress leader and Kerala's former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has been hospitalized in Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of the state. The 79-year-old politician has been diagnosed with pneumonia and continuous to be under observation.
Chandy was admitted to a hospital on Monday after he developed high fever. Following his hospitalization, Oommen Chandy's son Chandy Oommen took to Facebook and wrote, "Father admitted in NIMS due to high fever. Father is diagnosed with slight beginning of pneumonia." The former Chief Minister has also been suffering from throat cancer, which is putting his health in a setback.
On Monday evening, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan called Chandy's family and inquired about his health condition. After being instructed by Pinarayi Vijayan, Kerala Health Minister Veena George visited Oommen Chandy on Tuesday and spoke to the doctor, who is attending the former Chief Minister. On Monday, the Kerala government has decided to set up a medical board led by nephrologist Dr Manju Thambi to ensure the best treatment for Chandy.
A bulletin from the hospital said that Chandy is currently on antibiotics and his condition is getting better. Speaking to a news agency, the former Chief Minister's son said that his father is fine and his condition is stable. His statement has come at a high time when there was a controversy that the former Chief Minister wasn't given proper treatment.
Oommen Chandy's brother Alex Chandy has alleged that the former has been denied effective treatment by his wife and his son. As such allegations were doing rounds on social media, Oommen Chandy released a video in which he said that he was being provided with proper medical care by his family and the party. In the video, Chandy said, "I have no complaints about the treatment I get for my ailment. My family and the party have provided me with better medical care. I have got expert treatment without fail."
By citing that the society and media have created a sad situation over his health, Oommen Chandy further said, "It is such a sad situation. We don't know what mistakes we have committed for being targeted so cruelly." It is pertinent to note that the former Chief Minister of Kerala has not been doing well since 2019 and he was taken to Germany a few months ago for medical treatment. Oommen Chandy had served as the Kerala Chief Minister twice and he has now been representing the Puthuppally constituency. After learning about his health setback, several Congress leaders and well-wishers have been extending their wishes to him for a speedy recovery.
