Veteran Communist leader D Pandian has been in a critical state and battling for survival in Chennai. The 88-year-old octogenarian has been getting treated at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in Chennai for the past few days amid the monitoring of a team of doctors. 

According to reports, his health had attained major setback in the morning hours of Thursday following which he was moved to Intensive Care Unit and placed under life support. Pandian, who is one of the notable communist leaders in the country, was admitted to Rajiv Gandhi Hospital on Wednesday after he complained of blood pressure and urinary infection. 

He has also been battling his age-related ailments and he has been moved to ICU and is currently getting treated in the ventilator support. The development had shocked the leaders and members of the leftist party and they have been expressing their prayers and wishes to the veteran leader for a speedy recovery. 

The reports say that he has been getting monitored by a team of doctors. On Thursday, Indian Communist Party's Tamil Nadu Chief Mutharasan had released a statement concerning Pandian's health condition in which he said, "Veteran leader of Indian Communist Party D Pandian has been getting treated at Rajiv Gandhi Hospital in Chennai in a critical state". 

"Tamil Nadu Health Secretary Radhakrishnan, Doctors Therani Rajan and Dinesh from Chennai Medical College Hospital have been monitoring and treating D Pandian", Mutharasan added. It must be noted that Pandian had a history of hospitalization three years ago as in 2018, he was admitted to Rajiv Gandhi Hospital after he complained of breathing difficulty. 

Pandian was put through intense treatment and he was also receiving Dialysis treatment for the urinary infection. He was in the hospital for few days and got discharged. Pandian has been staying off from active politics owing to age-related ailments. Amid the home-based treatments, his health has attained a setback after which he was rushed to Rajiv Gandhi Government Hospital on Wednesday. 

According to reports, Pandian has been receiving Dialysis nearly for a decade to treat his urinary infection. Pandian had served as the Secretary of the Indian Communist Party in Tamil Nadu for many years and observed close ties with the state and national leaders. Pandian was one of the potent hands of the party and contributed to the rise of the party in the state. 

Pandian had also served as Member of Parliament from Tamil Nadu. He was elected to the Lok Sabha from North Chennai Constituency in the 1989 and 1991 elections. In 2009, he was elected as the Tamil Nadu State Secretary of the Communist Party of India and he served in the post for six years till 2015 after which he was succeeded by incumbent R Mutharasan.
