In the wake of judicial directive from the Supreme court, the results of recounted postal votes registered in Radhapuram legislative constituency in Tamil Nadu are yet to be declared in what it appears that the electoral disputes still on between the Dravidian parties of the state.
Radhapuram constituency had registered the victory with very thin margin in 2016 Tamil Nadu legislative elections where the constituency had won by the AIADMK's Inbadurai by acquiring 69,590 votes while his opponent from the rival party DMK's Appavu had secured 69,541 votes that had flagged the victory for Inbadurai in the margin of just 49 votes after which Appavu had tabled his petition in Madras High court through which he had challenged the victory of his rival party where in his petition, he had accused the poll and electoral officers to act upon favoring the ruling party AIADMK in Radhapuram constituency after when the rest of the constituencies had lighted with the victories of AIADMK party, that had formed government by the then Chief minister J Jayalalithaa in 2016
.
Through his petition, he further indicated that there were the grounds of objections raised by both the parties while the poll officers had started counting the postal votes in Radhapuram constituency and in the wake of disputes, the party agents were ordered to vacate the counting hall after which the count had accounted with discrepancies and he had asked the state's judicial bench to issue orders towards recounting the postal votes. After hearing the arguments, the state's top judicial bench had ordered the Election commission last week to recount the votes that were registered in Radhapuram constituency in 2016 elections and further directed the commission to deposit and to count the postal ballots along with the last three rounds of polling before the high court's registrar.
With accord to the directive, the postal ballots and last three rounds of EVM polling were counted in the middle of high security in the Madras High court premises yesterday in the presence of the registrar for vigilance and it has been reported that the counting had lasted for about seven hours and amidst the counting, AIADMK's Inbadurai had knocked the doors of the Supreme court and obtained a stay order for not declaring the final results. In his petition to the apex court, Inbadurai had said that the government school headmaster who had officially signed off on the postal votes doesn't fall under the category of officer with gazetted rank and urge the apex court to resolve the issue without which the results shouldn't be declared.
After hearing the petition, the apex court bench which comprised of Justices Arun Mishra and Ravindra Bhat had issued the order to not declare the results and they had adjourned the case for next hearing on October 23rd, 2019.
