The prestigious Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan (PSBB) school in Chennai has been surfaced with escalating trouble after the shocking revelation of sexual harassment to the students. The accused teacher Rajagopalan, who was working in the school for two decades, was arrested by the Chennai police earlier this week and remanded under judicial custody in Puzhal Prison, Chennai.
The incident of sexual harassment had appalled the state as what was known as one of the eminent educational institutions in the city had now seen its reputation getting collapsed. The dreadful incident had come to light last Sunday when some of the former and current students in the school had petitioned the school management and shared their pains on social media.
The issue had swiftly drawn attention from across the country as it had brought the worst face of online classes in the state. It had triggered a fresh #MeToo movement in the city with several women leaders and celebrities are demanding that justice must be meted out to the affected students. Amid the strong call for justice, two new complaints of sexual harassment have been filed against Rajagopalan in Chennai on Friday.
According to reports, two fresh complaints of sexual harassment were lodged against the accused teacher of PSBB School, who has been under judicial custody in Puzhal Prison. The complaints were lodged in the Ashok Nagar police station and following the complaints, the police officials of Ashok Nagar are investigating the matter and taking measures to collect the evidence against the complaints to initiate further action on Rajagopalan.
Recently, some of the former and current students had shared their woes and awful behaviour of Rajagopalan. They accused Rajagopalan of appearing to the online classes half-naked with only a towel wrapped up in his body. Rajagopalan had also sexually harassed the girl students during physical classes, let out obscene comments about their pictures, and body shamed them. He further went on to call a girl for a movie.
As he put out inappropriate behaviour as a teacher, the students had initially complained about Rajagopalan to the school management, but the management has failed to take action against him. After the allegations came to the light of the public, the school had suspended Rajagopalan. Later, the Chennai police had arrested him and slapped a case under POCSO Act.
But, it didn't end there as several complaints have been lined up against Rajagopalan and the school. The police had earlier projected that more affected students would come forward and file a complaint against the teacher for sexual harassment and against the school for its negligence over addressing the complaints from the students about the horrible events.
As two more complaints have now been lodged against Rajagopalan, trouble mounts against the PSBB School as several people are demanding that the government has to take over the management of the school. The incident had also triggered the #MeToo movement in Chennai as it has been reported that many students had faced harassment in more such reputed schools in the city.
On Wednesday, Chief Minister MK Stalin has passed crucial orders for curbing such harassments and threats to the students. The government has said that in the view of avoiding any such online harassment in the future and for the safety of the children, the school management should record all the online classes. The government has instructed both the school managements and Parents Teachers Association (PTAs) to form committees and both committees must review the recordings frequently. The Chief Minister has affirmed that the offenders will be booked under the POCSO Act.
