The midnight attack at the Tamil Nadu BJP Head office in Chennai had spurred turmoil within the party as the party leaders allege DMK's role behind the attack, in the midst of the probe by the Chennai police. The police had arrested a man in connection to hurling a petrol bomb at the Tamil Nadu BJP's head office 'Kamalalayam' in Chennai.
The attack that happened at the dusk has caught major attention when the state is gearing up for the urban local body polls. According to reports, an unidentified person had hurled a petrol bomb at the BJP Head office at around 1 am on Thursday. However, the office incurred no major damages and the incident was reported to the police. A police team had arrived at the office and reviewed the situation.
The officials had gathered the CCTV footage in the area which had shown that a man comes in a two-wheeler and flees the spot after hurling a petrol bomb inside the office. The police had launched the probe and held a manhunt to detain the assailant. The reports say that the police officials had zeroed in the search and nabbed a man, named Vinoth, who belongs to Nandanam, Chennai. The police had arrested Vinoth and taken him under custody and it had then come to the revelation that Vinoth has similar such cases in the past.
During the investigation, Vinoth has said that he had hurled the petrol bomb as Tamil Nadu BJP President Annamalai had voiced in favour of the NEET examination. Further investigation is underway and following the incident, hundreds of police have been deployed around the BJP's head office to counter any untoward incident.
Reacting to the attack, the BJP has condemned it and claimed that the state ruling DMK has a role in the attack. Speaking to ANI, BJP leader Karate Thiagarajan said, "A petrol bomb was hurled at our office around 1.30 am. A similar incident had taken place 15 years ago with Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam's (DMK) role in it. We condemn the Tamil Nadu government's role in this incident. We have also informed the police. BJP cadres don't get intimidated by such attacks."
Tamil Nadu BJP President K Annamalai had arrived at the party office following the attack. He inspected the place where the bomb was exploded and he had then addressed the press. Speaking to the reporters at the party office, Annamalai said, "We demand a National Investigation Agency (NIA) probe into this incident. The guilty should be booked and punished. Law and order deteriorating in our state. NIA is the only solution to this incident where truth and conspiracy will come out."
"We seek NIA investigation because we think there is a larger conspiracy behind this petrol bomb. This should come out", Annamalai added as he slammed DMK over the deterioration of the law and order in the state. On the other hand, the police had issued an official statement concerning the attack and said that Vinoth had hurled the petrol bomb after the BJP had supported the NEET.
The statement said that a police team from the Mambalam police station had rushed to the spot after the officials were informed about the attack, which happened at around 1.20 am on Thursday. The team has gathered and inspected the CCTV footage and further investigation has shown that a history-sheeter, Vinoth has hurled the petrol bomb. The statement further said that 38-year-old Vinoth, a native of Nandanam, Chennai was arrested for investigation.
During the investigation, Vinoth had hurled the bomb after developing anger against BJP for supporting the NEET. By citing that there has been no religious or political instigation behind the attack, the police said that Vinoth is habitual of committing such crimes. Moreover, Vinoth has over ten cases pending against him and he also had got arrested in 2017 for hurling a petrol bomb at the Teynampet police station. The police have begun the proceedings of producing Vinoth before the court and remanding him in the judicial custody.
