'True leader of people and beloved MP' - From PM Modi to CM EPS, leaders pay tribute to H Vasanthakumar!

In what has become a tragic loss for the Congress party and for the nation, the demise of Congress MP H Vasanthakumar had saddened the state and national leaders as they are mourning to the businessman turned politician who had become the latest victim of the COVID-19 viral infection. 

Vasanthakumar, who needs less introduction in Tamil Nadu even before becoming a politician through his largest appliances retain chain 'Vasanth and Co', had died due to the global pandemic on Friday -August 28 in Chennai at the age of 70, becoming one of the notable figures to succumb to the disease. Through his decades' long public life as a successful businessman and as a significant politician, Vasanthakumar had earned the ever-lasting reputation across and beyond the state. 

With the tag of the well-known face in Tamil Nadu, he pitched into politics and joined the Congress party and he served as an MLA in Tamil Nadu assembly from Nanguneri constituency twice and then he contested in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls in Kanyakumari parliamentary constituency and enter the Parliament for the first time after defeating BJP's Pon Radhakrishnan. His national victory yielded him as one of the rising leaders of the nation's oldest party. He observed good ties with the party's leadership both in the state and the center. 

Earlier this month, he was tested positive for the COVID-19 viral infection and he was admitted to the Apollo Hospital in Chennai and he had battled the pandemic for the past three weeks. However, he remained critical and his health went deteriorated on Friday and he breathed his last at around 7 pm on Friday- August 28, leaving a vacuum and grief for the irreplaceable loss. Vasanthakumar was the brother of former Tamil Nadu Congress party president Kumari Anandthan and the deceased leader is a niece of sitting Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundarajan. After his demise made headlines, national and state leaders have been paying their condolences. 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter and said, "Saddened by the demise of Lok Sabha MP Shri H. Vasanthakumar Ji. His strides in business and social service efforts were noteworthy. During my interactions with him, I always saw his passion towards Tamil Nadu’s progress. Condolences to his family and supporters. Om Shanti." 

 

In his tribute note, former Congress President and senior leader Rahul Gandhi said, "The news of Kanyakumari MP, Shri H Vasanthakumar’s untimely demise due to Covid-19 has come as a shock. His commitment to the congress ideology of serving the people will remain in our hearts forever. Heartfelt condolences to his friends and family members". 

 

Congress party spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said, "Deeply saddened at the untimely demise of a born fighter, resolute Congressman, M.P & Working President of TNCC - Sh. H. Vasanthakumar. All of us, along with lakhs of his supporters, will always miss him deeply. Heartfelt condolences to family & well wishers. RIP." 

 

Congress leader and former Union Minister Chidambaram said, "The demise of our beloved friend Vasanthakumar had deeply shocked all of us. Curiosity, vibrancy, and laughter, are his hallmarks". Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami said, "The demise of Kanyakumari MP Vasanthakumar, who worked for the educational and economic development for the poor, was a disaster for the Congress party and people of his constituency. My deepest condolences to his family and his party". 

 

DMK President Stalin said, "I'm saddened by the news of Kanyakumari MP Vasanthakumar's demise. His pleasant demeanor, a hard worker who worked tirelessly and proved himself a winner. My deepest condolences to his family and congress party".  In its obituary, Congress party said, "We are deeply saddened by the untimely demise of Shri H. Vasanthakumar. A staunch Congressman, true leader of the people & beloved MP. He will be sorely missed by all members of the Congress party & his followers. Our prayers are with his family in this time of grief.". 

 

Senior ADMK leader and Tamil Nadu Minister Jayakumar said, "Vasanthakumar has a smiling face and I have never seen him get angry. He will communicate everything softly and I have also seen him as an MLA in the assembly and its very shocking to hear about his demise". Another senior minister SP Velumani and also placed his condolences to his family and party. 

 

Senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad said, "I am deeply saddened by the sad demise of colleague Lok Sabha MP Shri Vasanthakumar who succumbed to Covid-19. The stalwart Congress leader served the people of Tamil Nadu throughout his life. His passing away is a personal loss to me as well as to the Congress". 

Congress spokesperson and actress Khushbu said, "We always use to call you #PunnagaiMannan Your warm smile,your easy approach towards a crisis,you wearing #Congress batch with supreme pride on your sleeves,never shying away from hardwork, your commitment to serve the poor.
