Trinamool Congress leader Mukul Roy's wife Krishna Roy has passed away in Chennai in the morning hours of Tuesday due to cardiac arrest. Mukul Roy is one of the second-line leaders in the party after its supremo Mamata Banerjee and the party cadres were shocked to learn about the demise of Roy's wife and they have been paying tribute to the departed soul.
Krishna Roy had suffered cardiac arrest and breathed her last at 4.35 am on Tuesday morning at a private hospital in Chennai. Her body will be brought back to Kolkata on Wednesday for her final rites. Krishna Roy was getting treated at a private hospital in Kolkata last month after contracting the COVID-19 viral infection. She was then moved to Chennai for further treatments.
According to reports, Krishna Roy's health had deteriorated during her treatment in Kolkata and she was shifted to a private hospital in Chennai in an air ambulance with the support of Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO). The hospital in Chennai had said Krishna Roy had suffered a cardiac arrest and she passed away despite the efforts to save her.
Earlier, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's nephew Abhishek Banerjee also made a visit to the hospital in which Krishna Roy was getting treated. After learning about the demise of Krishna Roy, several cadres and leaders of the Trinamool Congress party are paying tribute to the deceased and expressing condolences to Mukul Roy.
Her final rites will be held on Wednesday in Kolkata and the family members have begun preparations to airlift Krishna Roy's mortal remains back to Kolkata. Mukul Roy was the first to join the Trinamool Congress after the party was formed and became a loyal aide of Mamata Banerjee.
In 2006, Roy was made the general secretary of the party and became the number two in the party after Banerjee. In April 2006, Roy became a member of the Rajya Sabha from West Bengal and he went on to serve as the Union Minister for Railways in the UPA regime. In 2017, Mukul Roy had developed a dissent against Mamata Banerjee and joined the BJP.
Roy was one of the scores of leaders who quitted TMC and joined the BJP and he worked for the Central ruling party in the recently-held state assembly polls. Mamata Banerjee's TMC had won the polls and became the Chief Minister. Weeks after the election victory, Mukul Roy had rejoined the Trinamool Congress in the presence of party chief Mamata Banerjee.
