Fans will have to wait a little longer to witness their magnum opus Thangalaan, starring Chiyaan Vikram directed by Pa Ranjith on the big screen. The much-awaited historical drama, which was initially slated to release on 26th January, has been postponed again due to the ongoing extensive post-production work required for the film.

According to the latest reports, the makers of ‘Thangalaan’ are planning to release the film in Summer 2024, hoping to cash in on the holiday season and the pent-up demand for quality cinema. The film, which spans over seven decades from the 1870s to the 1940s, chronicles the evolution of the Kolar Gold Fields (KGF) in Karnataka and the struggles of the mine workers who toiled under harsh conditions.

‘Thangalaan’, which means ‘gold mine’ in Tamil, is a passion project of director Pa Ranjith, who is known for his socially conscious films such as ‘Kaala’ and ‘Kabali’. The film is produced by K E Gnanavel Raja under the banners of Studio Green and Neelam Productions. The film boasts of a lavish budget and a stellar technical team, including composer G V Prakash Kumar.

The film also marks the first collaboration between Chiyaan Vikram and Pa Ranjith, who have both carved a niche for themselves in the Tamil film industry. Vikram, who is known for his versatility and dedication,  has undergone a massive physical transformation for the film, sporting different looks and hairstyles to suit the challenging historic period.

‘Thangalaan’ also features a talented ensemble cast, including Parvathy Thiruvothu, Malavika Mohanan, Pasupathy, Daniel Caltagirone, and Harikrishnan Anbudurai in pivotal roles. The film is set to release in multiple languages, including Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Kannada, and Malayalam, catering to a wide audience across the country and abroad.

‘Thangalaan’ promises to be a cinematic spectacle that will transport the viewers to a bygone era and immerse them in a grand adventure. The film is expected to showcase the rich history and culture of the KGF region, as well as the human emotions and conflicts that shaped the lives of the miners. The film is also likely to touch upon the socio-political aspects of the mining industry and its impact on the environment and the society.
