DMK MLA Ku Ka Selvam, who is one of the top leaders of the party, has sent shockwaves to the party's leadership after deciding to switch side from the Dravidian party to the saffron camp as the legislator is expected to join BJP on Tuesday, months after another DMK leader VP Duraisamy dissented from the party and joined the BJP.
In what has become one of the incidents that stirred intra-party furor, the reports close to the development stated that DMK's MLA Selvam will be officially joining BJP in Delhi in the presence of BJP's National President JP Nadda at around 4.30 pm on Tuesday, as he sent confirmation that he would be quitting the DMK party and shaking hands with the party's main rival.
Ku Ka Selvam is currently serving as the DMK's MLA from Thousand Lights constituency in Chennai, which is the main constituency that covers most of the areas of the downtown city. After knowing the development that Selvam would be joining the BJP, DMK President MK Stalin has, on Tuesday, convened an immediate meet in the party headquarters in Chennai.
According to the reports, the meeting has been attended by senior leaders Duraimurugan, RS Bharathi, and TKS Elangovan and the state opposition leader has been discussing about the exit of Selvam with the senior leaders. Ku ka Selvam, has been serving as one of the secretaries of the party.
He joined the DMK party in 1997 after exiting the ADMK party. One of the top leaders in Chennai, he has been representing the Thousand Lights constituency currently that was previously represented by DMK President MK Stalin. The reports say that Selvam was in dissent against the party for not awarding him the post of secretary of Chennai's West party district, that was earlier held by J Anbalagan, who died of COVID-19 viral infection on June 10. However, the party has awarded the post to Chitrarasu, who is the member of DMK Youth Wing and close to Stalin's son Udayanidhi Stalin.
Following that, Ku Ka Selvam was reported said to have dissented over the appointment of the post that he hoped for and reports added that the leader has decided to join the saffron camp. Earlier, DMK's Deputy General Secretary VP Duraisamy has dissented from the party and officially joined BJP in May by meeting the party's Tamil Nadu president L Murugan. After the development, Stalin has expelled Duraisamy from the party. Six weeks after joining BJP, Duraisamy was appointed as Tamil Nadu BJP's Deputy President.
