When you talk about IPL, one team that you cannot avoid giving special attention to is CSK. Right from the first tournament, the team has shown extreme competitiveness and has ardent fans all over the world, which is a distant dream for many teams. Previously led by the calm and fierce Dhoni, the team had it all to at least make it to the top 4 in almost every season and the yellow army has been a successful team in the history of IPL.
Being the defending champions to bracing up for three consecutive defeats in the current edition, what has changed the trend drastically? What do the CSK need to do to revamp themselves? Let's take a look at three things that the team must work on to take over the show by exhibiting an impressive comeback,
1. Captaincy matters
It was Mahendra Singh Dhoni's show all the way when it comes to leading the CSK team. As he is known for giving unexpected shocks and twists, it was announced just before the start of the first match in this year's IPL that Ravindra Jadeja would lead the CSK team from now and Dhoni would continue as a player. In what has become a major change of guard, it appears to be a good choice at this point but the problem is that Jadeja depends too much on Dhoni as he is inexperienced in captaincy.
As he captains the defending champions, it is understandable that he needs time to settle but the control must be in one person's hands to take decisions and drive the team towards victory. Captain Jadeja is falling behind the all-rounder Jadeja and though it's healthy for CSK as its captain can shine with the bat and ball, Jadeja's first major league as the captain is having a flawed opening and unless the captain in him comes up with new strategies, the team can't be salvaged.
Jadeja is an able cricketer, who can be counted as a game-changer. His association with the CSK has been promising and remarkable, which made him to the top of the list to succeed MS Dhoni when the latter decided to step down as the captain. Known for his tenacious trait, Jadeja is facing a real test for his leadership in keeping the team potent with an unhinged journey. Chennai is used for such consecutive defeats but is well-known for its impressive comeback. Now Jadeja is in the front and he can write history on how he is leading the fleet.
2. Bowling woes
Bowling is another important factor that the present-day CSK must repair before fueling an attack. CSK is a team that relies more on its batting prowess and it is not known to have world-class bowlers in its line-up. The fact that they however manage to win matches by cleverly using the advantages of their own bowlers is something that was appreciated all these years. But this year, the bowlers are yet to fire up.
The bowling line-up is vital to contain the opponent. In the midst of the lack of a strong face, CSK has no dearth of finding new ways and strategies. In their second game against the Lucknow Super Giants, the CSK lost the game even after scoring a mammoth 200+ score and it says a lot about their bowling. It is undeniable that Deepak Chahar's absence is a worry but they can still make use of newcomers like Hangargekar and Theekshana to lift their spirits up.
On the other hand, the blemishing batting line-up is another Himalayan task that Jadeja needs to fix right away. Chennai has a history of being decorated by legendary batsmen from Mike Hussey, Matthew Hayden, to the present-day MS Dhoni and the baton is now passed on to Jadeja to maintain that decorum with the strong factor of grasping the momentum. For the fans who had watched CSK's match against Punjab on Sunday- April 3, it was clearly evident how the flawed CSK's top-order batting line-up is costing a victory.
3. Team selection
Selecting the right team is always a tricky game in IPL but you have to make it right anyway, in a fashion that it won't go out of your hands. With the current team not being up to the mark, the CSK can try a bunch of players from the bench and see if they can bring in any change. Importantly, it is time for a revamp of the team. Chris Jordan, who was very handy with the ball was brought into the team very late and he could have made wonders in the first two games considering that the bowling unit of CSK is weak at the moment.
Adam Milne in place of Pretorious could also be a game-changer. While Shivam Dube is making his selection worthy as a batsman, the poor show from Ruturaj Gaikwad has come under scrutiny with the voices to replace him. However, Jadeja has said that Gaikwad has his backing. The good news is that Uthappa is getting into the form and he can be counted to have a breakthrough. Fans didn't expect a hat-trick defeat, but the game is still on and CSK can be able to take over the show.
Let us wait and see how the Kings, who are known for great comebacks, approach the upcoming games in IPL 2022. CSK will take on Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 9 at Dr Patil Sports Academy Stadium in Navi Mumbai. Jadeja's fleet has ample time to fix the flaws and frame new strategies.
