An elderly man from Tamil Nadu had carried out what was the risky journey of his age amid the complete lockdown - pedaling his wife for 130 kilometers with his self-mission of providing timely treatment for her as she has been diagnosed with cancer and the accomplishment of his journey has taught everyone on how to overcome the prevailing challenges when it comes to saving the lives of the loved ones.
Arivazhagan, 65-year-old labor living in a village near Kumbakonam in Tanjore district has carried his wife Manjula on the bicycle from his hometown to the Jawarharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) in Puducherry. With the hope of giving her treatment, he pedaled her for 130 kilometers and arrived at the hospital and given her wife a timely treatment. Manjula is 60 years old and diagnosed with oral cancer. She was ought to undergo a third chemotherapy session at the Regional Cancer Center (RCC) in Jipmer.
The hospital has scheduled the chemotherapy session on March 31st and the couple was not in the position to avail treatment at a private hospital and they can't rent a cab and the state has been brought under the lockdown that had closed the borders. However, Arivazhagan was determined to take his wife to the hospital and he decided to take her to Puducherry on his cycle. He eventually declined the advice of his relatives.
He began the challenging journey on the night of March 30 and reached JIPMER on the scheduled date of the chemotherapy session and wherever his journey was barricaded by the police, he has shown the medical records and treatment details of his wife. The police had let them go and offered the couple with food. According to the reports, Arivazhagan has stopped once for breakfast on March 31st at Kurinjipadi. He pedaled through Mayavaram, Sirkazhi, Chidambaram, and Cuddalore following which he reached Puducherry.
However, he was shocked to learn that the hospital has temporarily closed the outpatient services due to the lockdown. After understanding their situation, the doctors and paramedical staff members had admitted his wife in the hospital and administered the chemotherapy session, on time. According to the Times of India, the medical superintendent of JIPMER said that Manjula had undergone two sessions of chemotherapy and she was done with her third one. The doctors had provided them with food and other essentials. They stayed at the hospital shelter that day after which they were taken to their hometown through an ambulance that was arranged by the hospital.
