The Tamil Nadu state police department has registered over 47,000 cases since March 24th till April 2nd across the state against the violators who reportedly flouted out the prohibitory orders that have been put in place under section 144 with the view of constraining the unnecessary movements of the people to curb the spread of the Coronavirus in the state.
The state law enforcement agency has apprehended 46,970 people for breaking the lockdown rules and over 35,000 vehicles have been seized and the department has fined and collected Rs 16.27 lakh from the violaters as the penalty.
The state government has, on March 24, imposed a curfew under section 144 across the state and brought the territory under unprecedented lockdown by closing the interdistrict and interstate borders, shutting down the establishments, and suspending the transportation channels as the measures to grip up the fight to contain the spread of the Coronavirus.
The government has appealed to the people to stay home and refrain from unnecessary travels unless it becomes essential. It has permitted the transports and movements of all the essential services and the police forces have been deployed across the state to monitor the movements of the people and vehicles and the police authorities are instructed to take stern action against the curfew violators.
Despite the curfew, the police have identified that the people are flouting the lockdown rules and making unnecessary travels and the authorities have been initiating the actions and seizing the vehicles. In Chennai, the city police department had booked 1,024 people in 24 hours from 6 am on April 1 to 6 am on April 2 and hundreds of vehicles including 981 bikes, 25 cars, and 14 auto-rickshaws have been seized during the period.
