The public and private schools in Tamil Nadu are all set to open the gates for students of classes 9 to 12 as the schools are reopening on September 1, 18 months after remaining under closure in wake of the Covid-19 pandemic and lockdown.
The Tamil Nadu government, after episodes of deliberations with various stakeholders, announced last week about the resumption of schools only for Classes 9 to 12 and the directorate of public health had also issued Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Covid-19 guidelines for the schools and students that need to be adhered to in the premises.
As the crucial resumption is just a week ahead, it has been reported that the schools across the state will initially be conducting refresher classes for the students. According to reports, the Tamil Nadu State Council for Education Research and Training has prepared a curriculum for refresher classes for students from Class 9 to 12 and the school education department is also been framing the schedule for refresher classes in a fashion that they won't run for a longer duration and would not make students inconvenient.
The refresher classes would be unveiled with the aim to remove the hassles of students in settling up for the physical classes for the first time in 18 months and would help the school in filling the learning gaps that are pervasive among the students caused by the new normal. The IANS had reported that the refresher classes for students from Classes 9 to 12 will concentrate on those who haven't attended the online classes regularly.
The first-of-its-kind session will also be helpful for the students to revisit the syllabus. Speaking to IANS, the headmaster of a government school in Tamil Nadu said that the first two weeks of the classes will be dedicated to clear the doubts of the students and teaching the refresher course materials. During the reopening, a thorough revision of the syllabus of the current academic year that was taught online from June to August would be taken up in physical classes while it reopens on September 1.
One of the pivotal factors behind the decision of taking the refresher classes is a study conducted by the school education department, which found that lack of connectivity, lack of power, power failures, and lack of proper devices in rural areas had pushed the students to lose the online classes on a regular basis. It must be noted that the government will begin deliberation about resuming the schools for Classes 1 to 8 after September 15, based on the output and functioning of the classes 9 to 12 from September 1.
