The medical experts' committee installed by the Tamil Nadu state government to advise on the COVID-19 has, on Monday, said the state is at the peak of COVID-19 infection and the numbers would fall in the upcoming days. 

The experts' committee was addressing the reporters in the Chief Secretariat in Chennai during which they put out the stumbling state of Tamil Nadu in tackling the COVID-19 pandemic. The members of the committee said that the state is currently at the peak of the infection and the numbers would decline in the upcoming days. 

They further alarmed that there are high possibilities that the state would witness the soaring rate of infection again after three months and they appealed to people to adhere to the safety and preventive measures strictly to lower the grounds of the rampant spread. The committee had earlier attributed the rise of the cases to the increase in COVID-19 testing. 

On Monday, the committee met with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami to discuss the crisis during which they recommended the Chief Minister to grip up the restrictions in Chennai, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, and Thiruvallur as these four districts amount for over 85% of total cases in the state. 

The meeting with the Chief Minister had lasted for about one-and-a-half-hour, the committee suggested the government on the enhanced lockdown and also advised the government to install the sufficient number of beds, medical equipment, and ventilators in the hospitals in Chennai. With accord to the suggestions, the Tamil Nadu government has imposed a complete lockdown in Chennai and its three adjacent districts for 12 days from June 19 to June 30. 

As of Sunday, Tamil Nadu has reported 44,661 cases so far and the state's single-day tally neared 2,000 for the past few days with a significant increase in the death toll. On Sunday, the state recorded 38 deaths and two-thirds of cases, discharges, and deaths were reported in Chennai.
