Tamil Nadu Congress Committee President KS Alagiri has tested positive for the COVID-19 viral infection on Sunday and he has been getting treated at a private hospital in Chennai and the development has come when the state unit of the national party has been gearing up for the campaign trail for the upcoming assembly polls.
The state unit has officially confirmed that he had contracted the viral infection through posting a statement on Twitter and said that he has been undergoing treatment. The party said, "Tamil Nadu Congress Committee Chairman KS Alagiri was diagnosed with Coronavirus infection this morning (Sunday) and is being treated at a private hospital". After Alagiri was spelled positive, the chairman of the media department of the state unit A Gopanna had undergone COVID-19 testing after he came in contact with the state president.
Following the development, the state president of the Indian Youth Congress had requested people who came in direct contact with Alagiri to isolate themselves and wished the state president for a speedy recovery. Several Congress leaders and leaders of the other parties took to social media and wished the Congress state president a speedy recovery. Former Congress leader Khushbu, who recently quitted the party and joined the BJP, had also wished KS Alagiri for a speedy recovery.
According to reports, KS Alagiri had met with DMK President MK Stalin last week and discussed about the assembly polls. DMK General Secretary Duraimurugan, Tamil Nadu Congress in-charge Dinesh Gundu Rao, and several leaders had also attended the meeting that was held at DMK headquarters in Chennai. Tamil Nadu has been witnessing many legislators and leaders getting tested positive for the viral infection.
So far, dozens of legislators both from the ADMK and DMK parties, including state ministers had tested positive for the viral infection. In November, Tamil Nadu state minister for Agriculture Doraikkanu had passed away at the age of 72 after getting tested positive for the viral infection while in August, Congress MP and entrepreneur H Vasantha Kumar had succumbed after contracting the pandemic.
According to the state health department, Tamil Nadu has reported 7,90,240 COVID-19 cases so far as of Sunday of which 10,788 are active, 7,67,659 have been discharged while 11,793 had died due to the pandemic.
