The Indian film industry is on cloud nine as two of its productions have won at the 95th Academy Awards held on March 12th, 2023, in Los Angeles. RRR's Naatu Naatu song won the 'Best Original Song' category, while 'The Elephant Whisperers' won in the 'Best Documentary Short Film' category. The wins have put Indian cinema in the global spotlight once again.
Celebrities across the country have been expressing their joy and congratulating the filmmakers. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin took to Twitter and tweeted on RRR's proud winning, #NaatuNaatu has created history by becoming the first Indian & Asian song to win the #Oscars. Congrats @mmkeeravaani garu, Chandrabose, Rahul Sipligunj & Kaala Bhairava, @ssrajamouli , @tarak9999 , @AlwaysRamCharan and the whole team of #RRR for this stupendous achievement."
And for the 'The Elephant Whisperers' team, he wrote, Congrats to Kartiki Gonsalves & @guneetm on winning the #Oscar. The Elephant Whisperers, produced by Sikha Entertainment, explores the relationship between a couple and an orphaned baby elephant in the Mudumalai National Park in Tamil Nadu, India. The 41-minute documentary had its world premiere at the DOC NYC Film Festival in November 2022 and was released on Netflix globally on 8 December 2022.
RRR, directed by S. S. Rajamouli, is a fictionalized account of the lives of Indian revolutionaries Alluri Sitarama Raju and Komaram Bheem, set against the backdrop of the British Raj. The film, which stars N. T. Rama Rao Jr., Ram Charan, Ajay Devgn, Alia Bhatt, and Shriya Saran, was released in March 2022 and has broken box office records, becoming the second highest-grossing Telugu film worldwide.
The wins have also brought attention to the subjects of the films. The Elephant Whisperers showcases the bond between humans and animals and highlights the importance of protecting wildlife. Meanwhile, RRR tells the story of two Indian revolutionaries who fought against the British Raj, shedding light on India's rich history and culture.
