Two weeks ahead of the crucial assembly polls, an independent candidate in Tamil Nadu who came to file his nomination papers to contest in the polls was booked for defying the Model Code of Conduct (MCC), which has been imposed in the wake of the elections.
According to reports, Vairamuthu alias Kunrathur Vairam has arrived to file his nomination papers to the Returning Officer to contest in the Sriperumbudur constituency in the assembly polls with a crowd of around 500 supporters. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and as per MCC, a candidate must adhere to the guidelines, and the presence of a huge crowd is not entertained while filing the nomination.
The MCC further directed that in a candidate's convoy, there should be a gap after every five vehicles and public gatherings and rallies can be conducted only with strict adherence to the COVID-19 guidelines. However, Vairamuthu was found that he had violated these guidelines while filing the nomination papers as he was accompanied by over 500 supporters. Under the grounds of the violation, he was booked on Friday for violating the MCC.
Vairamuthu is already known to be notorious as he already has criminal records under his name. The 41-year-old has been accused in several cases of murder, kidnapping, and assault in Kunrathur, Sriperumbudur, Somangalam, and Sunguvarchathiram. With the slew of criminal record, he has decided to contest in the upcoming assembly polls from Sriperumbudur independently.
The process of filing nominations for contesting in the Tamil Nadu polls was over on Friday and according to the Election Commission, over 6,200 nominations have been filed in Tamil Nadu of which over 90% are male candidates. In maximum, the Karur constituency has seen 90 candidates filing the nominations while Ranipet and Cheyyar had seen eight nominations each, the lowest count in the state.
