Tamil Nadu BJP President Annamalai has been awarded 'Y' category security cover by the Union government based on the intelligence report that he is under threat. The allocation of the new security detail to the IPS officer-turned-politician was made by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.
According to reports, the new security detail to Annamalai will be above the security cover provided by the Tamil Nadu police. With the up-gradation, Annamalai will be given round-the-clock protection by armed personal security officers drawn from the Central Reserve Police Force (CPRF) and the Security Branch CID of the state police. The intelligence agencies had gathered the level of threat to Annamalai received in recent weeks and had prepared a report.
As per the report, the security has been enhanced after a detailed assessment of Annamalai's threat perception. The new security cover has come a month after petrol bombs were hurled at the Tamil Nadu BJP head office. In February, petrol-filled bottles were hurled at the BJP office and the Chennai Police had arrested one person in connection with the attack.
It was assessed that the accused had thrown petrol bombs in opposition to the party's stand in favour of the NEET. After the incident, the state unit of the BJP had demanded a National Investigative Agency (NIA) probe into it. Now, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs has enhanced the security apparatus for Annamalai and under the Y category of security, he will be protected by at least four armed personal security personnel round-the-clock.
Besides the central cover, the Tamil Nadu police will also enhance outer-ring security to him and upgrade surveillance of the place where Annamalai stays and tours. In India, the security cover will vary based on position and threat perception. The Indian Prime Minister receives security cover from the Special Protection Group (SPG). Following SPG, the cover goes in the names of Z+, Z, Y+, Y, and X. Besides national and political leaders, top businessmen, and celebrities will be also be offered security cover on the requirement and based on the level of threat.
