The Tamil Nadu police department has suspended three police officers under the grounds of assaulting a disabled person. A case has been registered against these officers under the sections of voluntarily causing hurt and wrongful restraint of the Indian Penal Code and intentionally injuring the disabled person under the sections of Rights of Persons with Disability Act. 

According to reports, these three policemen were working at the Viralimalai police station in the Pudukottai district. They were suspended on Thursday - March 17 for assaulting 29-year-old Shankar, a person with a disability, who is a resident of Kavarapatti village in the district. Shankar has sustained injuries and he has been currently getting treated at the Government Hospital in Viralimalai. 

On Tuesday night, Shankar had made a call to the control room and reported that liquor was being sold near a school in Kavarapatti. Based on his call, the control room officials had informed the Viralimalai police station. Shankar runs an electrical shop near the government school. After receiving the information, a woman constable of the Viralimalai police station has contacted the phone number to inquire about the matter.

However, the woman constable was verbally abused by the person who picked up the call. She came to know that the person was in an inebriated state. The woman constable ha disconnected the call and reported the incident to her higher officials. The officials had traced down the location of the phone number and picked up Shankar, a person with visual impairment. 

The officials had brought Shankar to the station on Wednesday for inquiry. During the investigation, Shankar has said that he did not know about the incident. However, the inquiry had then moved into an argument between them and three police constables had brutally assaulted Shankar.

As the incident of assault came to light, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the Central Zone, Saravana Sundar IPS has said that the three constables are placed under suspension. The incident of assault is being probed by the Deputy Superintendent of Police, Viralimalai. With grave injuries, Shankar was taken to the Viralimalai government hospital for further treatment.
