With the view of refraining more crowds at the banks in the city, the Greater Chennai Corporation has decided to instruct the banks under its limits to suspend some of the services which would reduce the grounds of more crowds.
Greater Chennai Corporation Commissioner Prakash has, on Sunday, said the civic body would issue a notice to the banks in the city to suspend the activities like withdrawal of small amount and updating the passbooks at the branches as the suspension would result in reducing and avoiding the crowds which would further curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Commissioner stated that the notice would be issued to the banks under the Epidemics Act and suspension of these services would reduce the crowd by 80% and he noted that there is the availability of ATMs across the city where people can withdraw the money. However, according to the reports, the civic body hasn't divulged when these services would be suspended.
The development has come when the city's graph of COVID-19 has been descending for the past few days. On Saturday, it has reported 1,185 cases and as of Saturday, the city's tally of total cases stood at 76,158.
According to the civic body, Royapuram (zone 5) had reported 8047 cases as of Saturday, the highest in Chennai followed by Tondiarpet - Zone 4 with 6563 cases, Teynampet - Zone 9 with 6521 cases, Anna Nagar - Zone 8 with 6449 cases, and Kodambakkam - Zone 10 with 5886 cases.
As of Saturday, Tamil Nadu has reported 1,34,226 cases so far of which 46,410 are active, 85,915 have been recovered, and 1,898 had succumbed to the virus.
