Thangamani's custodial death: How the autopsy report spark fresh trouble for DMK govt?

In the midst of the one-year celebration of the DMK government in Tamil Nadu, the back to back custodial deaths have come as a backlash for the MK Stalin administration as the autopsy reports of the victims have revealed that they had sustained injuries during the custody to which they had succumbed to death. The shocking incidents had put the policing under scrutiny and the opposition parties had criticized the Chief Minister, who is responsible for the state's police force.

Days after the autopsy report of 25-year-old Vignesh, who died in custody, has come to light, the postmortem report of another man, 47-year-old Thangamani was released on Friday - May 6 and it has revealed that he had broken ribs and severe injuries. Thangamani was a resident of Thattarai in the Tiruvannamalai district and he died on April 26 under the custody and his family had alleged that the police had tortured him inside the prison.

Thagamani was detained by the Tiruvannamalai prohibition wing police for questioning about the illegal liquor sale on April 26. Hours after his arrest, he had suffered health complications following which he was admitted to the Tiruvannamalai Government Medical College Hospital where he died the same day. While the police had claimed that he had died due to health issues, Thangamani's family has alleged that the police had tortured him.

The case of Thangamani's custodial death has been probed by the CBCID and four police personnel, including ADSP, in connection with the case were transferred and kept in reserve. The postmortem was performed on April 28 by two doctors in the presence of the judicial magistrate and the proceedings were video recorded. The report had revealed bruises in two locations on Thangamani's right hand and on his left hand.

The autopsy report of Thangamani has further revealed that both the injuries have occurred 12 to 24 hours before his death. It has been reported that a deep blood clot on the back of his left hand near the little finger was incurred six hours before death while the third and fifth ribs were broken with blood clotting in both areas. Along with Vignesh's custodial death, the revelation that Thagmani had also sustained injuries during the custody had become fresh trouble to the DMK government.
