The Chief of BJP's Telangana unit, Bandi Sanjay Kumar was arrested during the night hours of Tuesday in Hyderabad in connection with the SSC paper leak case. The development has drawn a nationwide attention and sparked a fury from the saffron camp and the party has warned Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, who is aspiring to beef up his politics on a national stage.
Besides being the chief of BJP's state unit, Bandi Sanjay Kumar is representing the Karimnagar constituency in Lok Sabha as its MP. He was arrested from his residence at around 11 pm on Tuesday and he was moved to various police stations before being lodged at Bommalaramaram police station under Rachakonda Police Commissionerate limits. His arrest has come at a high time ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Telangana to inaugurate various projects.
A large number of BJP workers thronged before the police station and protested against Bandi Sanjay Kumar's arrest. The workers have raised slogans against K Chandrasekhar Rao and urged the police to release the BJP chief. Several BJP leaders join in defence of Sanjay Kumar and slammed the ruling regime by terming the detention as an 'illegal arrest'.
The BJP has also filed a petition in the Telangana High Court on Wednesday in which the party sought the grounds under which Sanjay Kumar was detained. Union Minister G Kishan Reddy, who is a native of Telangana, condemned the police action of arresting Sanjay Kumar and termed the event as 'undemocratic'. Taking to Twitter, BJP leader Amit Malviya wrote, "In a midnight operation, Telangana police has arrested BJP state President Bandi Sanjay Kumar on fabricated charges of being involved in secondary school paper leak. This won't end well for KCR."
Before apprehending him, the police have released the FIR in which it has said that Sanjay Kumar had been taken into preventive detention. Kumar was later arrested days ahead of Prime Minister Modi's visit to the state. Kumar is known for being a strong critic of the Chandrasekhar Rao government amidst Rao's venture into national politics.
The police claimed that the SSC paper leak case was filed against Sanjay Kumar. According to reports, the SSC (Secondary School Certificate) question paper for the Hindi examination had allegedly leaked on Tuesday in Warangal, minutes after the examination commenced. A day earlier, on April 3, the SSC question paper of another subject had also allegedly leaked.
The photos of leaked Hindi paper were circulated on social media by Booram Prashanth, who is a BJP worker. As police suspected the involvement of BJP and its chief in the paper leak case, Sanjay Kumar was arrested. The arrest has triggered a war of words between BJP and KCR and while the BJP has been criticizing the ruling KCR regime, Telangana minister KTR said that the BJP leaders are playing with the lives of innocent students. "For their selfish politics, BJP leaders are playing with the lives of innocent students and unemployed by leaking question papers", KTR wrote.
