The Indian government has appointed T.S.Tirumurti as India's Permanent Representative to the United Nations. The Chennai born diplomat, who is currently serving as Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs, will now be the face of the country at the global body United Nations, replacing incumbent Syed Akbaruddin.
The Ministry of External Affairs has released the statement in which the ministry stated that Tirumurti has been appointed as the next Ambassador/ Permanent Representative of India at the United Nations at its global headquarters in New York. The elevation of the diplomat to the global stage has come amid the Coronavirus outbreak.
According to the reports, Tirumurti was born in Chennai and holds a bachelor of commerce and a degree in law. He is a 1985 batch Indian Foreign Service officer and he has earned rich experience in Indian diplomacy by playing crucial roles and holding important positions in Indian missions abroad. He has previously served in Indian missions in Cairo, Geneva, Washington, Gaza, and Jakarta.
He has also served at the Indian Foreign Ministry as Undersecretary for Bhutan, Joint Secretary for Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, and the Maldives and served as Indian Ambassador to Malaysia for nearly five years. He currently holds a position of Secretary - Economic Relations at the Foreign Ministry since 2018.
He will now be succeeding Syed Akbaruddin as the next Permanent Representative of India at the United Nations. Akbaruddin is due to get retired this month and he holds a notable place in India's foreign affairs. Akbarudding has been serving at the United Nations since January 2016 and represented the country at the global forum on the crucial issues including India's resolution in pressing the global body to designate Pakistan based Jaish-e-Mohammed leader Masood Azhar as a global terrorist.
The Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations is India's foremost diplomatic representative to the global body. The Representative is the head of the Permanent Mission of India at the UN. T.S. Tirumurti would be the 22nd Indian Representative at the United Nations.
