Tamil Nadu ranks first in good governance: Here's all you need to know!

The Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances, which functions under the Union Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances, and Pensions, had released the index of 'Good Governance' on Wednesday for the year of 2019 through which it was revealed that the state of Tamil Nadu tops in the country by having good governance while compared to the rest of the eighteen big states that were on the list.

The states like Maharashtra, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, and Andhra Pradesh took the following rankings respectively behind Tamil Nadu while the states like Odisha, Bihar, Goa, Uttar Pradesh, and Jharkhand have been trailing with the poor performances as these states were seen below the table.  Addressing the launch of the Index, Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office, Jitendra Singh stated that the Index has been scientifically designed based on various parameters of the governance.

The Ministry's official statement said that the released index would act as a uniform tool in accessing the status of the governance and the impact of various interventions initiated by the  State governments and Union Territories. The Index had divided the states into three divisions- Big states, North-East and Hill states, and Union Territories.

Tamil Nadu tops the list of Big states whereas Himachal Pradesh was ranked first in the list of North-East and Hill states followed by Uttarkhand, Tripura, Mizoram, and Sikkim while Jammu and Kashmir, Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh were on the last. As far as the Union Territories are concerned, Puducherry was named as the best-governed UT followed by Chandigarh and Delhi while Lakshadweep got the last place with poor governance.

The reports say that the states are taken into assessment based on their performance in ten sectors namely agriculture and allied sectors, human resource development, commerce and industries, public health, public infrastructure and utilities, economic governance, social welfare and development, judicial and public security, environment, and citizen-centric governance.

The states like Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram, Daman and Diu are the best performing and ranked on top in agriculture and the reports stated that this ranking was ascertained under the grounds of the growth rate of agriculture, food grains production, milk and meat production, crop insurance, and horticulture production whereas Jharkhand, Uttarkhand, and Delhi ranked in first three spots in the commerce and industries.

The Index also revealed that the state of Tamil Nadu tops in Judicial and Public Security Sector Ranking and so in the Public Infrastructure and Utilities. In the Public Health sector, Kerala ranked first while Tamil Nadu stood at the second spot and in the Agriculture sector, Tamil Nadu spotted in ninth place and the state was awarded 14th rank in Commerce and Industries sector and spotted at fifth place in Human Resource Development. As far as Economic Governance is concerned, Tamil Nadu ranked in fifth place while it managed to stay at seventh place in the Social Welfare and Development sector.
