Tamil Nadu Minister and Senior ADMK leader R Kamaraj is in a critical state as he has been battling for survival after developing COVID-19 complications. Kamaraj has been serving as the Minister for Food and Civil Supplies. He has been currently getting treated at MGM Healthcare hospital in Chennai.
Kamaraj was tested positive for the COVID-19 viral infection and he was admitted to MIOT Hospital in Chennai on January 5. The hospital initially said that he was stable and asymptomatic. Last week, he was discharged from the hospital following treatment for the global pandemic. However, two days ago, the minister had developed health complications and complained of breathing difficulty.
Kamaraj was admitted to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital for further treatment and he was under continuous observation. According to reports, a team of doctors from MGM Hospital went to Rajiv Gandhi Hospital to review the minister's health and they recommended that the minister should be moved to MGM for higher treatment.
Following the recommendation, Kamaraj was shifted to MGM Hospital on Tuesday night and he remains critical and placed under life support including a ventilator and ECMO. According to a news agency, a senior doctor at the MGM Hospital said that the minister's health condition remains critical though his vital parameters had stabilized after he was put on life support.
The doctor said that the COVID-19 viral infection has severely affected his lungs and a team of doctors is treating him aggressively with the fact that his recovery will be at a slow-pace. The Minister has been put under life support as he has been battling for survival. Several political leaders including DMK President MK Stalin wished the minister for a speedy recovery. It must be noted the legendary singer SP Balasubrahmanyam was getting treated at the MGM Hospital for COVID-19.
So far, dozens of legislators, ministers, and political leaders were tested positive for COVID-19 in Tamil Nadu of which some of them had died due to the health complications of the infection. Last October, then Tamil Nadu agriculture minister Doraikkannu had passed away in Chennai due to COVID-19 while DMK legislator J Anbalagan had died of the novel coronavirus last June.
