With over three years of delay, the state of Tamil Nadu is most likely to host local body elections by the end of December in what it can be reported as the local bodies would soon get people elected representatives after three years since the formation of the current legislature in 2016.
The local body elections which were supposed to replace the previous Mayors, councilors and Panchayat leaders in 2016 when the current assembly took oath under the then Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, but the elections, which should have held at the end of 2016 had postponed by citing the sudden demise of Jayalalithaa and adding to that, the state's opposition party DMK tabled its petition in the Madras High court and put a stay for the notification of state's election commission for local body polls in 2016 by claiming that there were multiple discrepancies in the reservation of Adhi Dravidar (SC/ST) candidates after which the ruling and opposing parties have directed major delays under the roof of legal battle that had revealed the political instability in the state.
The ruling ADMK party in the state has been extending and enacting the powers of the people's representatives to the authorities for more than six times by passing resolutions in the assembly as the administrative officials have given with the powers and duties of Mayors, Councilors for the last three years. By observing deep silence and apathy, the ADMK party has now been preparing to face the local polls after the party had attained massive victories in two by-elections that were held last month as the state election commission get readies to issue electoral notification mostly in the first week of December for the polls that would be conducted on 27th and 28th December.
With having one month left, the election commission has been interacting with district collectors and executing the initial stage of check on the available electronic voting machines in the state. While speaking about the developments, an official from election commission had admitted that the commission had issued a notification to conduct the local body polls in December and added that the notification also carries the directives of polling hours in panchayats, town panchayats, municipalities, and corporations where the eligible voters can cast their votes from 7 am to 5 pm. The official cited that the polls would be undergoing two phases.
The election heat is on and so is the heat between political parties and both top parties of Tamil Nadu have been finalizing the candidates and seats with their allied parties and the prevailing camps of the parties have been tabling with the applications from the party men and the cadres to contest in the local body polls.
