The state of Tamil Nadu has been witnessing heavy downpour in most of the districts since Saturday that had inundated and stagnated the roads with full of waters which had disturbed the daily life of the residents. The coastal districts have been showered with the rainfall where Chennai city and its suburbs were half-drowned as the rainwater entered the homes and submerged the roads.
The suburban areas like Madipakkam, Perungudi, Neelankarai, Injambakkam, Kargil Nagar and Korattur were devasted while the inner parts of the city have gone through the steady pattern of rainfall that lasted for the entire day of Sunday. The Meteorological department had predicted that the districts like Cuddalore, Villupuram, Theni, Dindigul, Virudhunagar, Tirunelveli, Puducherry, and Kanyakumari districts would likely to witness heavy rains on Monday and the Meteorological department has forecast more rains in the next two days across Tamil Nadu.
The current pattern of heavy rainfall has claimed dozens of lives in the state where on Sunday, an 81-year-old man has died in a wall collapse at Nanguneri in Tirunelveli district while about 15 people have died in Mettupalayam, Coimbatore after the houses were collapsed due to heavy rain.
The reports say that at least 15 people have died as three houses collapsed at Nadur village that lies in Mettupalayam, Coimbatore in the early hours of Monday. It has been reported that after the compound wall was collapsed, the residents inside the house were stranded under the wreckage that had claimed their lives. The deceased include 10 females, three males, and two children. The reports have stated that the fire and rescue department had rushed to the spot and rescued the bodies and dispatched to the Government hospital in Mettupalayam.
On Saturday, a 70-year-old man has died at Melattur village in Thanjavur district after the wall was collapsed on him due to heavy downpour. The Southern districts like Ramanathapuram and Tirunelveli have been inundated by the torrential rainfall where Rameswaram, Pamban, and Thangatchimadam recorded with 110mm rainfall. Papanasam dam in Tirunelveli district registered with 141.65ft just 1.35ft short of reaching its fullest capacity. The authorities have evacuated people living near the dam to the safest places.
