As a veteran BJP leader, Yediyurappa had served as the Karnataka Chief Minister four times and he has been currently representing the Shikaripura constituency in the assembly.
While several names are on the card, the BJP will most likely be picking a leader from the Lingayat Community as the Chief Minister as this community gives a strong voter base for BJP in Karnataka.
His resignation was widely expected on Monday as the result of a political crisis in the state where the veteran politician had earned a pile of rebels from within the party in his two-year term.
For BJP, losing Yediyurappa's stronghold is equal to losing the Lingayat community- the strong vote bank for the Central ruling party that pillars the party's reign in the state.
As the rebellion grows against Yediyurappa, it has been reported that the BJP's central leadership will consider expanding the cabinet in Karnataka to accommodate the rebels.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has called an all-party meeting in the state to discuss the matter, which has been long-simmering, with the representations of all the parties.
He got admitted to the Manipal Hospital and hospitalized for nine days after which he was discharged. It is the same hospital that Yediyurappa has got admitted to again on Friday.
