In a sudden political twist, DMDK has decided to quit ADMK's alliance after the episodes of hectic parleys and talks had failed to reach an amicable consensus over seat-sharing for the upcoming assembly polls. The development had stirred a political debate over what's next for Vijayakanth's party and whether it is going to contest in the polls independently. In line with Sasikala's decision of staying off from politics, the DMDK's decision to quit the ADMK alliance has become one of the major political twists that were unfolded in Tami Nadu ahead of the polls.
The statement, signed by Vijayakanth, concerning the decision was released by DMDK on Tuesday in which it has said, "DMDK had held talks with ADMK three times for the upcoming assembly elections. The ADMK had refused to allot the requested numbers of seats. The talks didn't attain an expected and desired conclusion and since all the DMDK districts secretaries had reached a decision, DMDK has decided to quit the ADMK alliance from March 9".
The decision has come hours after the DMDK leadership held a discussion with the party leaders on the alliance and seat-sharing. Initially, DMDK had demanded the ADMK to offer 25 assembly seats for the polls. However, the Tamil Nadu ruling party had denied the allocation as per DMDK's demand and tried to convince the DMDK leaders to settle up for 15 seats. Both the parties had held talks that had gone into deadlock.
As we had earlier mentioned that reaching a deal with DMDK was a big challenge for ADMK, the ruling party leaders including senior ministers had met Vijayakanth last week and convinced him to settle for 15 seats. However, DMDK had urged the ADMK to provide more seats than what it has offered to PMK (Pattali Makkal Katchi). The ADMK had offered 23 seats for PMK and DMDK had demanded at least 25 seats.
There were no signs that ADMK and DMDK would reach a consensus and it was also speculated that DMDK had held talks with DMK as an alternative shelter if it quits the ADMK alliance. After the episodes of talks and parleys, DMDK has now decided to quit the ADMK alliance by claiming that the state ruling party had failed to offer the seats as per its demand. The decision was made on Tuesday, three days ahead of the commencement of filing nomination papers to contest in the assembly polls.
Though Vijayakanth cited that the failure of talks with ADMK had brought the alliance to an end, he has not revealed what's next for the party and it is yet to be known that whether the party will contest independently and join the alliance. While addressing the reporters on Tuesday after quitting the ADMK alliance, DMDK leader Parthasarathy said that the party's next course of action will be decided on Wednesday.
As the DMK has closed its gates by allotting the seats to the existing alliance, it has now been speculated that DMDK will knock on the doors of Dhinakaran to ally with AMMK to contest in the polls. DMDK had begun the talks with ADMK by demanding 41 seats and later on, it has decreased and finally demanded 25 seats. Amid the talks, Vijayakanth's brother-in-law LK Sudhish took to social media and said, "Our Chief Minister Vijayakanth, our symbol Murasu, and our flag is DMDK party flag".
His statement had sparked a fresh round of debates as he has hinted that the party is ready to quit the alliance if the demanded seats were not offered. Days after his statement, DMDK has on Tuesday officially quitted from the ADMK alliance. The party cadres of the DMDK had begun celebrating across the state after quitting the ADMK alliance with Sudhish saying that today's (Tuesday) decision marks true Diwali for the party.
