Stalin's claim and Governor's request...First day of TN Assembly session!

The DMK and its allied parties had staged a walkout from the assembly session on Tuesday even before the Governor's speech in the last assembly session of the current assembly. The Tamil Nadu assembly has on Tuesday convened its session with the speech of Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit. His speech was full of praises for Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami as he showcased the government's schemes ahead of the assembly polls.

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the assembly was convened at the Kalaivanar Arangam at Wallajah Road, Chennai as it would accommodate the legislators with social distancing. The Governor had convened the session and ahead of his speech, the DMK and its allied parties had staged a walkout from the session by citing the delay by the Governor in deciding on the release of Perarivalan, one of the seven convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.

The opposition parties further alleged that the Governor was not permitting to prosecute the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and various ministers against whom the DMK had raised allegations of corruption. While leader of opposition MK Stalin tried to speak before the Governor's speech, the Governor appealed to the opposition parties to take full advantage of the session by participating in the debates as this session would be the last assembly session of the current assembly.

The Governor said that the Central government has allocated Rs 1.03 lakh crore for Tamil Nadu which will help the development activities. Looking at Stalin and Duraimurugan who are the Leader of Opposition and Deputy Leader of Opposition respectively, the Governor said, "You are all senior leaders and best orators. This is my humble request. Please cooperate and take full advantage of the session".

The Governor said that the DMK can stage protests if they wanted and they have to come back to the house. However, DMK and its allied parties including Congress had staged out of the assembly. While speaking to the reporters after the walkout, DMK President Stalin said, "We have submitted a list of corruption cases against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and other ministers to the Governor.  However, he has not responded to it".

By claiming that the Governor's delay is evident that he is supporting corruption, Stalin said that the Governor has also not responded to Perarivalan's release and added that to condemn the Governor, the opposition parties have decided not to participate in the assembly session. According to reports, the DMK and the opposition parties had boycotted the entire session.

As the assembly continued with no opposition, the Governor had showered the rain of praises on the ruling government. Banwarilal Purohit said that Tamil Nadu is the only Indian state that had done the most number of RT-PCR tests for the COVID-19 pandemic and claimed that the state is showing signs that the economy in the state is getting revived. The Governor said that the entire credit goes to the Chief Minister in coordinating the government's machinery in curbing the COVID-19 pandemic and added that Tamil Nadu is successfully steering ahead under the leadership of Edappadi Palaniswami.
