The prices of essential vegetables in the state of Tamil Nadu have been increasing day by day that caused uncertainty among the people amidst the heated accusations between the state government and the traders, where the government has issued strict warnings for the traders by citing that they had hoarded the stockpile of the vegetables with the view of increasing the demand and price.
The people have been stranded with no way than to reduce the consumption as one kilogram of Bellary onion is costing around Rs 100 from the usual and average price of Rs 30-40 per kilogram. By rebutting the accusations made by the government, the trade unions have cited that the price has increased due to a shortage of vegetable inflow from the states of Maharashtra and Karnataka after severe floods.
On Tuesday, the state government issued severe warnings for the traders, who have hoarded onions more than 50 tonnes, will face strict actions and the officials stated that the same will be applicable for the retailers who amassed over 10 tonnes. It has been reported that the state government has installed special teams of the Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection Department to conduct fierce searches across the state to make sure that no traders house the stocks of vegetables. In the wake of an unprecedented rise in the price, the state government authorities have indicated that they would compensate the shortage by consigning more onions from Maharashtra.
By denying that no traders have accounted for holding a massive stockpile, the President of the Koyambedu Wholesale Traders Association has claimed that the government has made falsified allegations against the traders where a huge amount of hoarding would eventually affect the traders. He further notified that the nearby states have been encountering huge rainfalls that had affected the movement of goods and transportation which had led to witness deficit in the supply of essential vegetables.
Adding to the line of Bellary onions, the price of drum sticks that were imported from Karnataka and Maharashtra have accounted for the rampant rise to Rs 120 per kilogram from the average amount of Rs 40 per kilogram and so are the prices of carrots, beans have increased. With the view of urging the state government to immediately intervene, the state's opposition leader and DMK President M K Stalin has said that the price of Onions has brought major disturbances and inconveniences to public and he asked the government to assure the people that they would bag essential commodities without any uncertainty and fear over meeting their demand.
