The Tamil Nadu police have apprehended six police officers in connection to the death of a 17-year-old, who died under custody. While the police have initially claimed that the boy died after eating spoiled food, the further probe revealed that he was beaten by the cops to death.
17-year-old Gokul Sri was a resident of Kannadapalayam near Tambaram and he was arrested by the railway police last month under the charges of heisting a battery that belonged to the railway department. As he was a minor, he was placed at a juvenile correction facility in Chengalpattu on December 29. Two days later, on December 31, Gokul was admitted to the Chengalpattu government general hospital.
His hospitalization has come after he developed health complications and later, he breathed his last. While the police and correctional facility have claimed that the boy died due to consuming spoiled food, Gokul's mother Nirmala has alleged that her son had died in a mysterious way and she petitioned to the Chengalpattu District Collector urging to probe Gokul's death.
In her petition, Nirmala said that Gokul was fine when he was arrested and expressed her suspicion that her son had beaten by the police to death. She further claimed that there were marks on his body. Based on her petition, a probe was launched into the matter and it has now taken a shocking turn with the revelation that the boy was beaten and murdered by the police officers.
Chengalpattu criminal court judge Rina had conducted an inquiry into Gokul's death. It later came to light that Gokul was murdered. It has been reported that the boy was attacked by policeman Anastraj at the correctional facility. He was fallen ill and taken to hospital, where he breathed his last. The murder case has been registered at the Chengalpattu police station and six police officers - Anastraj, Charanraj, Vijayakumar, Mohan, Vidyasagar, and Chandrababu have been arrested in connection to attacking the minor boy. All six officers were produced in the court on Friday and lodged in Chengalpattu jail.
