In a shocking development, Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Sitaram Yechury's son Ashish Yechury has passed away in the morning hours of Thursday at the age of 35 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The development had saddened the communist party leaders and the leaders from the other political parties and they have been paying tribute to the departed soul and expressing their condolences to Yechury's family.
68-year-old Sitaram Yechury has been serving as the National General Secretary of the Marxist Communist Party and he has confirmed the demise of his elder son. Taking to Twitter, senior Yechury wrote, "It is with great sadness that I have to inform that I lost my elder son, Ashish Yechury to COVID-19 this morning. I want to thank all those who gave us hope and who treated him - doctors, nurses, frontline health workers, sanitation workers, and innumerable others who stood by us."
According to reports, Ashish had tested positive for the novel coronavirus, and initially, he was admitted to the Holy Family hospital for two weeks for the treatment and he got later shifted to the Medanta Hospital in Gurugram. He had been receiving treatment at Medanta and he had breathed his last at around 6 am on Thursday at the age of 35 due to the pandemic after which Sitaram Yechury had confirmed his demise.
35-year-old Ashish Yechury was working as a senior editor at NewsLaundry, a leading news portal in Delhi. As soon as the news of his demise broke out, several leaders have been queuing up to pay their tributes. President Ram Nath Kovind took to Twitter and wrote, "Grieved beyond words to learn about the untimely demise of Shri Ashish Yechury. In this moment of profound grief, my deepest condolences to Shri Sitaram Yechury, his family, and loved ones. May you find the strength to bear this irreparable loss."
Vice-President Venkaiah Naidu said, "Deeply shocked & anguished by the untimely passing away of Ashish Yechury, son of Shri Sitaram Yechury due to COVID-19. My heartfelt condolences to Shri Sitaram Yechury garu & all other family members in this hour of grief. Om Shanthi!" In his tribute note, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote, "Condolences to Shri Sitaram Yechury Ji and his family on the tragic and untimely demise of his son, Ashish. Om Shanti."
Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra took to Twitter and said, "My deepest condolences to Shri Sitaram Yechury and his family. There are no words at a time like this, only prayers. May you have courage." Replying to Sitaram Yechury's tweet about his son's demise, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor said, "Devastated by the news @SitaramYechury @seemay. There is no greater loss for a parent to endure. May you find the strength to bear the inexpressible grief of your loss. My heart goes out to you at this painful time."
The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has issued a statement concerning the demise of Sitaram Yechury's son Ashish Yechury. In its statement, it has said, "We are deeply sorry to announce the passing away this morning (22 April) of Ashish Yechury, son of Sitaram Yechury and Indrani Mazumdar. He died of Covid related complications. He was 35 years old. The Polit Bureau conveys its deepest condolences to Sitaram and Indrani, his wife Swati, his sister Akhila, and all other members of the bereaved family".
