In what has become a shocking revelation, a Manipur woman, who was paraded naked by a mob of hundreds of men two months ago, is the wife of a former Army officer who fought for India in the Kargil war. The chilling incident that happened on May 4, the day after the violence between the ethnic groups of Meiteis and Kukis in the state broke out, had come to light on Wednesday - July 19 in a form of a video and went on to spark nationwide fury.
As the video had escalated tensions in an already-violence-hit Manipur, it has come to revelation that one of the women who was sexually assaulted and made to walk naked on the streets is the wife of a retired veteran and he had lamented that he protected the nation during his service in the borders but after retirement, he couldn't able to protect his home.
The woman's husband had served the Indian Army as a Subedar of the Assam Regiment. While speaking to a Hindi news channel about the horror happened to his wife, he said, "I fought for the nation in the Kargil war and was also in Sri Lanka as part of the Indian Peace Keeping Force. I protected the nation but I am dejected that after my retirement, I could not protect my home, my wife and fellow villagers."
"I am sad and depressed", he added. By citing that a mob had vandalized and burnt down several houses on May 4 in the area and made two women to walk naked on the streets, the Kargil war veteran further said, "Police were present but took no action. I want that all those people who burnt the houses and humiliated the women get exemplary punishment."
He stated that his own place has become more dangerous than the battlefield. After the video triggered anger, the Manipur police admitted that a case with this regard was filed on May 18. However, until Wednesday when the video came to light, there were no arrests made and on Thursday, Manipur Chief Minister Biren Singh said that the police had arrested the main culprit and his government would take efforts to ensure that the accused get capital punishment.
Taking to Twitter, Manipur police wrote, "The State Police is making all-out efforts to arrest the other culprits at the earliest. Raids are continuing." It has been reported that the police had arrested four accused so far even as the gruesome incident had pushed Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who remained a mute spectator over the Manipur violence for over two months, to break his silence as he said that what happened to the daughters of Manipur can never be forgiven. On Friday - July 21, a visual had shown that a group of local women had burnt down the house of one of the culprits who was behind this heinous crime.
