In a shocking development, notable Bollywood actor Asif Basra was found dead in a private complex in Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh on Thursday. He was 53 and known for his roles in movies such as 'Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai', 'Kai Po Che', and 'Jab We Met'.
According to reports, the Dharamshala police said he was found dead in a private complex and a team of forensic experts was deployed to the spot for further investigation. The law enforcement agency has launched the probe into the actor's mysterious death and further details are awaited. The reports say that the actor could have committed suicide. He had a property on lease for the past six years in McLeodganj, Upper Dharamshala and he used to visit the place regularly.
The development has shocked the fans and fraternities and soon after the news of his death headlined, fans and stars have been remembering his contribution and paying their tribute to the deceased actor. Asif Basra had a career spanning for over two decades and in his career, he had played supporting roles in many reputed features like Black Friday, Outsourced, and Parzania.
Basra has played as a stall owner in 'Jab We Met' directed by Imtiaz Ali which was released in 2007 and the movie was also starred by Kareena Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor. He acted as the father of Emraan Hashmi's Shoaib Khan in 'Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai' directed by Milan Luthria, which was released in 2010.
Besides acting in Bollywood movies, Basra had appeared in a couple of South Indian films - Suriya starred 'Anjaan' in Tamil that was released in 2014 and Mohanlal starred 'Big Brother' in Malayalam that was released in 2020. Basra was last seen on the big screen in Vivek Agnihotri's 2019 movie 'The Tashkent Files' along with Shweta Basu Prasad, Naseeruddin Shah, and Mithun Chakraborty.
Basra had also acted in 'Paatal Lok', which was a hit series on Amazon Prime and the actor was last seen in the Disney+Hotstar series 'Hostages', and the second season of the series was released earlier this year. Condolences have been pouring in from the fans and fraternities to the family of the deceased actor.
Reputed actor Anupam Kher took to Twitter and said, "Deeply Saddened and Shocked by the death of #AsifBasra. Have acted with him in a couple of films but met him on several occasions. He was a wonderful actor and a very pleasant person. My heartfelt condolences to his family and friends". Hansal Mehta said, "Asif Basra! Can't be true... This is just very, very sad."
Actor Manoj Bajpayee tweeted, "What? This is too shocking!! Shot with him just before Lockdown!!! Oh My God!!!". In his tribute, Oscar-Winning sound designer Resul Pookutty said, I can’t believe he is gone! RIP #asifbasra gone to soon! Great actor and great enthusiast!"
