In a shocking piece of news, a 22-year-old techie has died due to a liquor overdose at an illegal rave party that was held at prominent VR Mall in Chennai. The gathering hasn't got consent from the authorities and after the revelation, the Chennai police had raided the bar and sealed it. The event has become the talk of the town and alarmed the police over possible rave parties at the popular malls across the city.
The 22-year-old deceased was an IT professional and he had died due to a suspected liquor and drug overdose at the party, which was held on Saturday. The rave party was held under the name of 'The Great Indian Gathering' and after the city police came to know about the event, the cops had raided the bar which was allegedly functioning on the fourth floor of the mall. The officials were shocked to know that the concerned bar was functioning with a proper licence, following which it was sealed.
The police had on Sunday said that the 22-year-old died on Saturday night after an excess consumption of the liquor. Speaking to PTI, an official has said, "The initial examination has revealed he had died of heavy drinking. He hails from Madipakkam in the city and after performing an autopsy at Royapettah Government General Hospital, the body was handed over to his family." It has been reported that around 900 people were present at the party.
The police have been waiting for an autopsy report to confirm the victim's cause of death. Following the raid, the police had asked the people to leave the venue before sealing the bar. The officials had seized over 840 liquor bottles and four people have been booked in connection with an illegal rave party. The reports say that the event was attended by a Mexican DJ Mandragora, who had posted pictures from the event.
The organizers had charged Rs 1,500 per head as an entry fee and they had served alcohol to the attendees despite the lack of licence to the bar. It has been reported that liquor for the event was bought from Monkey Bar, situated on the third floor of VR Mall. Monkey Bar was also sealed by the officials after it hasn't got a valid bar licence.
On the other hand, comedian Vir Das, who had an event scheduled at the venue on Sunday, said that the authorities had sealed the venue and the show was cancelled. Taking to Twitter, Das wrote, "My team and I were leaving for the venue when we were informed and must of course respect and cooperate with the authorities, so we will be rescheduling the show. That's all the information I have right now. There's no getting in or out of the venue. Will keep you posted."
"Guys. We were informed as we were headed to the venue. The authorities have decided to conduct a forensic, full investigation this evening. Spoke to the organisers and there’s honestly no way anyone could have known any sooner. When the police let them know, they let us know", he added in another tweet. It must be noted that Greater Chennai Police Commissioner Shankar Jiwal has taken the suo moto cognisance of the event and has warned that strict action will be taken against the people who conduct such illegal parties in the city.
Chennai Police Department has released a statement in which it has said that a special team led by an inspector has been directed by Jiwal towards monitoring entertainment parties in the city and it came to know about the illegal rave party which was happening on the fourth floor of the mall. Investigation revealed the party was conducted by inviting people to register themselves through a mobile application to reserve their attendance.
