In a shocking development that saddened the entire state of Tamil Nadu and beyond, Sangeetha, who was a well-known transwoman and entrepreneur, was found dead at her residence in Coimbatore, and the police officials had on Wednesday recovered the body and sent for the autopsy for further investigations.
Sangeetha was a notable face among the transgender community in the state and recently she had started a business to employ and help fellow people from her own community. Sangeetha was also serving as the President of the Coimbatore District Transgender Association. According to reports, she was not reachable since Sunday.
With having no response from her for the past two days, some of the members of the association went to her residence in Saibaba Colony in Coimbatore on the morning hours of Wednesday to check her and when the members sensed a stench and creepy smell from the residence, they had alerted the local police on the development following which the police officials arrived at the spot.
When the police officials stormed into her residence, they found her dead and recovered the body from the plastic drum, that used to store water. The officials said that her body was wrapped in a blanket and concealed inside the drum at her residence. According to reports, the police officials said that they had found an injury on her neck region but it's yet to get conformity on whether any weapons were used. The police had sent the body to the government hospital for the autopsy and launched a probe to find the assailants.
In what has become a dreadful incident, the crime had got major attention across the state and the activists have been demanding the government to arrest and take strict action against the culprits. Sangeetha had been working to the upliftment of fellow transgender people and recently she had started a business in which she had employed transgender people.
In September, Sangeetha had started an eatery named 'Trans Kitchen' in RS Puram, Coimbatore, and the eatery was completely run by the transpersons. She had primarily employed transgender people who lost their jobs in the wake of the COVID-19 lockdown and restrictions. The reports say that she had fought a long battle to keep her venture running and as most of the restaurants were closed owing to the lockdown, Sangeetha had established the eatery with the capacity of occupying 32 people at one time.
She had started with the view of benefitting the people of her own community and within a month of establishing the eatery, she had passed away and her demise had shocked her own community across the state. Some of the members of the association said Sangeetha had no enmity with anyone and she had initiated several schemes for transgender people. She worked tirelessly to provide job opportunities for trans people.
The reports say that she ran the eatery with 12 transgender persons and she raised funds across the state and started the hotel and her hotel has become the first restaurant in Tamil Nadu to run completely by transgender people. While the police said that the motive for the crime is still unknown, some reports suggest that she could have killed due to the business enmity.
Speaking to a news agency, a well-known transgender activist in Tamil Nadu Grace Banu had condemned the murder and urged to conduct a fair and complete probe into her death. Sangeetha was very active in protests against Transgender Persons Act 2019 and Banu said that she can't believe that Sangeetha was gone and added that who would have killed such a well-loved person. In her Facebook post, Banu said that its heartbreaking to learn about her demise and demanded the police to punish the culprits.
